Stick Shift and 6 Cylinders: 1987 Ford Econoline Van

Tipper Eric sent this car in with the following words: Who orders an Econoline with a stick and a 6?  I have to meet this person!  Yup, this is a strange vehicle..and one that I am familiar with..I learned to drive on similar manual transmission equipped van...but if I recall correctly my old man didn't buy this from the factory as much as win it in some strange business deal like Han Solo winning the Millennium Falcon, but in the end a young (probably 12 year old) me learned to drive a stick shift van with velour seats and Yoda's cane as a gear shifter. It was a long time ago. Find this 1987 Ford Econoline Van offered for $1500 in Bakersfield, NC via craigslist.

Rear Engine: 1965 Sunbeam Imp

The Hillman/Sunbeam/Chrysler/Rootes Imp was a zippy little descendant of the Scottish built Linwood Imp and was built by the Rootes Group from 1963 to 1976. It used a Beetle-esq rear-engine rear-drive setup but its body shape was anything but Buglike and it looks more like a strange cross between a Ford Escort Mk I and a Mini.  Find this 1965 Sunbeam Imp offered for $17500 in Sacramento, CA via craigslist. Five Point Yellow: 1989 Ford Mustang LX

It's hard to believe that the Fox Body Mustang is 41 years old....well not today's example, but it is 31 and not exactly a spring chicken. Let me put that in perspective...imagine you are living in 1989 (that's not that much of a stretch) and you tried to daily drive a Ford from 1958...or even 1948!!  It just wouldn't have been feasible unless you were a real oddball....but I could easily imagine driving an 89 Ford everyday in the year 2020...because I am a real oddball! Find this 1989 Ford Mustang LX here on eBay bidding for $7700 in Scottsdale, AZ with 1 day to go.

People Might Notice: 1990 Buick Reatta

This next car comes as a tip from BP who writes: Definitely a unique vehicle but with all the work done to it vs the price makes the idea attractive. Maybe such a ranked driver but unique going into the future. Only one at 'cofffee' no doubt.  Got that lovely 3.8l too.  Find this 1990 Buick Reatta offered for $4995 in Burlington, NC via

Fast Coupe: 2008 BMW M3 E92

The 4th generation of the BMW M3 was released in 2007 and it featured a big departure from previous models. Gone was the screaming inline-6 engine and in its place was a throaty V8...which was a heresy according to BMW fanboys but it sold quite well and the 414 horsepower and 295 ft-lbs of torque was welcome to anyone except the serious inline-6 nut.  Today the magic of depreciation means the $60k+ M3 is now 1/4 of that original price...time to buy. Find this 2008 BMW M3 offered for $18888 in Walnut, CA via craigslist.

Appreciation for Depreciation: 2010 Audi S5

The Audi S5 is a two-door version of Audi's pavement pounding S4 sport sedan, but the S5 didn't get the upgraded 3.0T supercharged V6 in 2009 and instead lived with the 4.2 liter V8 shared with the R8 through the 2012 model year.  It isn't a bad thing to have a screaming 7000 rpm V8 instead of a boosted V6, and the S5 seems to have been hit with the magic depreciation train...which isn't a bad thing if you are in the market for a fast two door. Find this 2010 Audi S5 offered for $16,351 in Beverly Hills, CA via craigslist.

The Dodge Shadow Knows: 1987 Shelby CSX #27 of 750

Something must have been in the electrons at the May 2020 Barrett-Jackson online auction that closed the other day because somebody paid a scandalous $20,350.00 for an '84 Dodge Daytona Turbo.  It wasn't even a Shelbyfied version and the trunk wasn't full of Breitling watches, so I don't know what to say.  I thought that this coronavirus thing would have caused some of the stupidity in the used/classic car market to calm down just due to general anxiety around what the next year will look like fiscally to most people...but the guy who dropped twenty large for an 84 Daytona probably isn't living paycheck to paycheck or concerned about his job...but maybe paying too much at auction is the latest symptom of COVID19?  It all seems so batty to me....but if I'm gonna drop a whole bunch of money on a used front-drive K-car variant Dodge, it's gonna be a Shelby. Find this 1987 Shelby CSX offered here on eBay for $11,900 or best-offer located in Grand Rapids, MI.

Mostly Automatic: 2001 Audi S4

This next car comes from Erik202 who writes: I came across this car and it interested me so i did a little research and found that the automatic trans version of these B5 S4s is actually much more rare than the 6mt. I'm not sure that is proper justification for choosing it over the manual but hey, it's something. the price doesn't hurt on this one either ($4178 USD). Find this 2001 Audi S4 offered for $5750 CAD ($4178 USD) in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada via

Renegade V-Eight: 1972 Porsche 914

The 914 was meant to slot into Porsche's showrooms below the premium 911 but to also fill the top of VW/Audi's lineup with a Volkswagen badge.  But the suits at Porsche didn't want to risk having the VW nameplate tarnish its image and convinced VW to allow it to sell all 914's exclusively through its USA dealer network with a Porsche badge on the front.  The resulting car was slow but great fun to drive due to its mid-engine layout and 2100 lb curb weight, but today's next example has had the dial turned up to 11 with a 350 cubic inch crate motor. Find this 1972 Porsche 914 V8 offered for $14000 in Long Island, NY. Tip from Rock On!

Globe Trotter: 1982 Volvo 262C Bertone 5.0V8

This next car is a real international traveler.  No...not the Scout...I'm talking about a car that was born in the mind of a Swede named Jan Wilsgaard and assembled in a factory by Italians at Gruppo Bertone in Turin, Italy with an engine made in France (the PRV6)...and it is now being offered for sale on an Italian website with an American V8 inside and with the car located in the head is going to explode.  Find this 1982 Volvo 262C Bertone 5.0V8 offered for  € 7.900 in the Netherlands via Tip from Eduardo.

Red White & Blue Plate Special: 1955 Plymouth Savoy Coupe

This next car is our feature for Memorial Day...because I've got some tri tip in the sous vide pot and nothing to do for the next 4 time to share something that is red-white-and-blue to the bone.  Find this 1955 Plymouth Savoy Coupe offered for $2500 in Belmont, MA via craigslist. Tip from Bill.

Remember Memorial Day 2020

This is just a short note to our US based readers to enjoy your Memorial Day weekend and don't forget the fallen heroes of wars past and present.  Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day to honor the 110,000 troops killed in action during the American Civil War.  In 1967 the final Monday of May was declared a federal holiday for all soldiers who have died in service.

5-Speed Swapped: 1988 Lincoln Mark VII LSC

The Lincoln Mark VII 1986-1992 (originally called the Continental Mark VII from 1984-1985) rode on the Fox platform shared with the Mustang, Thunderbird, and Cougar. It was powered by Ford's legendary 5.0 V8...but saddled with a basic 4-speed slushbox but this next owner has fixed that with a few parts from a used Mustang. Find this 1988 Lincoln Mark VII LSC with 5-speed offered for $3800 in Douglas, PA.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6

Before we get to far into the details of this next car, I've got to point out the major elephant seal in the room -- this thing has a slushbox auto.  But maybe that is okay in a car that was never designed to clip apexes or let you heel-toe.  This is a car built for cruising down the highway at something moderately near the legal limit.  This is not a Fitbit Versa 2 or an Apple Watch 5...this is a TAG is mechanical beast that is equal parts jewelry and status...and certainly not something you'd want to get wet.  And the red pin stripe interior is wicked.  Find this 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 offered for $4000 in Ladera Ranch, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Cheap Commuter: 2004 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T 5-Speed B5.5

The Passat has been Volkswagen's large family sedan option for many years and it is typically been based on a platform shared with the Golf and built in Mexico, but the B5 generation Volkswagen Passat was built on a Germany built platform shared with the Audi A4/A6 from 1997 through 2005.  This means that it used a longitudinal front-drive (and optional 4motion all-wheel-drive) setup and could be had with a number of engines, including a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder turbo, a 2.8 liter V6 and a 4 liter W8.  In an odd twist of things, the 1.8T 4-cylinder engine (chipped to 200 hp) and mated to a 5-speed with front-drive is actually the most fun to drive out of the powertrain options...and today's example comes slightly lowered and fitted with wheels from an C4 generation Audi UrS6.  Just make sure the seller has used synthetic oil and drive it for another 100k miles.  Find this 2004 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T offered for $2300 in Fremont, CA via craigslist.

Malaise-o-naise: 1977 Ford Mustang II

This next car comes from tipper Zach who writes: It was <not> the best of times.  I don't know what you'd do with this thing.  A modern ecoboost monster of some sort?  Cram a 302 in and just saunter?  Grab the drivetrain from a Prius and don't amaze your friends?  At least you can feel that 'wind in your hair' with the sunroof.  And probably feel some water when it leaks, too.  Snazzy white vinyl tho! You are correct Zach!!  My favorite part of this car is the fact that the interior looks surprisingly intact with its clock forlornly stuck forever at 10:56.  Find this 1977 Ford Mustang II offered for $1000 in Chickaloon, AK via craigslist.

The Other Sport Wagon: 1975 Opel 1900 Sport Wagon

If you wandered into a Buick dealer in the early 1970s you would be surrounded by the kind of land barges you'd expect from Buick.  Big chrome, big bumpers, and big V8 is what you expected from GM's performo-luxury brand which was not as luxurious as Cadillac, but not as performancy as Pontiac...but certainly better appointed than Chevrolet.  Anyway, if you wandered off into the corner of that Buick dealer, you might be surprised to stumble over a little compact thing with European construction and an Opel badge...because you could buy a Buick Sport Wagon for hauling your wife and 9 kids or you could buy an Opel Sport Wagon for you, your wife, and few small Pomeranian puppies. Find this 1975 Opel 1900 Sports Wagon offered for $1500 in Nashville, TN via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!
