Manual Swapped: 2001 Audi S8 Quattro

If you are a car guy and have never enjoyed the Robert De Niro and Jean Reno classic Ronin (1998) you need to schedule yourself a few hours and pick up a copy on Amazon.  The D2 generation Audi S8 was the feature car that was driven in anger by Skipp Sudduth's nerdy hacker/driver character who insists on getting a custom nitrous system and then hauls the giant sedan through small cobblestone covered French streets.  It is fantastic -- and you can watch one of the S8 scenes in a clip on youtube here.  After watching Ronin a few times, you'll get the kind of itch that only an all-wheel-drive V8 powered Audi can solve...and this next one is a bit janky, but it does have a manual gearbox swapped in from another Audi. Find this 2001 Audi S8 Quattro offered for $6800 near Minneapolis, MN. Tip from Cory.

They say that meeting your heroes is a bad idea & that’s partially true. They have the potential to exceed your expectations but they also have the ability to fall short some what. For me, the S8 has been an absolute blast of a car to own and it really does put a smile on my face every time I drive it... But the fact of the matter is, I have another car that does that job for me even better. The journey that this car has had is unlike any other in in the last eight months I have owned it it has truly brought me a lot of joy; but priorities for me are changing a little bit and I would like to be able to get a nicer UrS4 in the future; the S8 just doesn’t fit into the equation for me anymore so I think it’s best I sell to someone who can continue its story that started with Austin Esau in 2017.

Now for the details:

2001 Audi S8 Quattro
-WAUGU54D31N011993
-171K - 360ps 4.2L 40V V8
-6 speed manual conversion (B5 S4 01E)
-Platinum (beige) leather interior, comfort seats, most everything works.

The manual conversion was done properly so there are no warning lights, reverse mirrors & park assist work properly, no PRNDL on the dash. Stock muffler was deleted (still have it), 19” Peelers are in the car, drove over 2,000 miles back this summer. Please read the build thread located at the bottom of this posting. Everything from brakes to timing belt has been done in the last 20K miles. I replaced the alternator & serpentine belt 5K miles ago, oil change is fresh & ready to go.

Needs:
-Front bumper cover swapped (I have correct color matched bumper cover, just need to install it & track down fog light grills)

-sunroof leaks (I suspect this has a bent track or some sort of alignment issue, drains appear to be clear)

-HID ballast installed (have new bulbs and a ballast, just haven’t put them on, as waiting until bumper swap)

-PS leak (pretty minor & looks easy enough to do)

-AC inop, never looked into (compressor, drier, and lots of the hoses were just replaced)

-interior has minor headliner sag & needs some door card help (glue has lost its stick on two of the four)

-intake flap fix (I have the Gruven metal links & the D3 intake manifold to install but never got around to swapping. No CEL but doesn’t get to full power level, think some of the flaps are sticky. Swap the D3 manifold on & you are good to go. Much better design)

These are all of the issues that I am aware of. There are a few minor squeaks and creeks from the interior but I don’t know what they are specifically, probably some sort of bushing flex. The car is currently in storage in Central Minnesota but I will probably have it out sometime around April or so. This is by far the cheapest properly swapped manual S8 around and it really doesn’t need all that much to be tiptop. Keep in mind, this is not a show car, and it’s very far from perfect. It’s got some paint swirls, it’s got some dings and scratches, it’s not a car that it going to be cooped up in a garage to slowly depreciate while it gets fawned after. Drive the damn car. This is Austin’s build thread and it’s really worth the read.

Looking to get $6800 OBO however I am open to some trades.

  2. I always daydreamed about doing an O1E swap in an S8. But had an overwhelming feeling that my 93 UrS4 was better. Confirmed.
