Tectonic Acceleration: 1978 Mercedes-Benz 240D W123

One of my favorite automotive memories was driving a vintage Mercedes oil burner through the hilly streets of San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. The 2.4 liter inline-4 cylinder non-turbo diesel engine didn't have much punch, but it did have enough torque to lug up seriously steep hills will very minimal throttle (errr...rack) input. Few cars have a similar ability to be started in first gear without the use of a the go-pedal up a hill...but you could just dump the clutch and go. I don't miss the tectonic acceleration...but I do miss a few interesting details on that old Benz.  Find this 1978 Mercedes-Benz 240D offered for $3,200 in Sevastopol, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Does Not Compute: 2001 Chevrolet Camaro...70 Cuda Clone

This next car comes as a tip from Matt C who writes: This is a fourth generation Camaro that is trying to look like a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda; real price is $10,000. Seller says it is one of a kind, and I certainly hope so.  Yikes.  There is so much to ponder in this next craigslist advert.  I had to put down the keyboard...walk away...and come back a few hours later.  I'm still getting a divide by zero error. Its 2 parts awesome and 4 parts WHUT?  Find this 2001 Chevrolet Camaro...70 Cuda Clone offered for $10,000 in Atlanta, GA via craigslist.

The Jet Set Life: 1987 Citroen CX 25 Prestige

I hate to be the guy who pooh-poohs all the good ideas around here...but buying a 30 year old Citroen is sorta like buying a private jet.  Its not intrinsically a bad idea...its just that the consequences are less than desirable.  Sure, its nice to brag to your friends about your new toy, but maintenance is expensive, constant, and time consuming.  Plus, there is the danger associated with piloting one of these things, maintenance logs, FAA clearance, et cetera...all for something that is gonna spend more time perched on 3 wheels than zooming around taking you to exotic places.  Bottom line, you should only buy this car if it is an emotional impulse buy and you can afford it.  Find this 1987 Citroen CX 25 Prestige offered for $12500 in Palm Beach, FL via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Two Scoops of Lemon Sorbet: 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1

This next car comes as a tip from Erik202 who writes: I have a strange desire to own one of these, I don't know exactly what it is, I am generally not drawn to things with the blue oval stuck to them but there was one that ran at the local dragstrip when i was a kid, definitely my first encounter with a Mach 1 of this body style.... mine would have to be a manual trans but this one meets most other requirements (ok maybe not price). I too share the strange urge to get a 72/73 Mach 1, and this seems to be a cool original condition example with the notable exception of the "AMX Dual pump trans"...which is totally a mystery to me...hopefully a typo.  Find this 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 offered for $21000 in Inland Empire Los Angeles area, CA via craigslist.

Old School: 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning

This next truck comes as a tip from Matt C who writes: Came very close to asking the seller about this one myself, but didn't have room to keep a truck this big until first gen Lightnings are worth real money. I wonder if I'll be kicking myself for passing this up in a decade or so.  I don't know if you'll need a decade to kick yourself for passing on this Lightning...because I almost called the seller instead of posting it!! Find this 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning offered for $2000 near Atlanta, GA via craigslist.

Simple Project? 1971 Jensen Interceptor Mk II

Over the years, I've purchased many different project cars and they've come in various shapes/sizes/conditions...but I've always been enchanted with the idea of a project that requires only basic tools, a single parking space, and mostly elbow grease.  A project that doesn't involve pulling a car off its frame, or massive rust repair, or rebuilding a fiddly vanos module...yeah...that would be a great project. Perhaps this Jensen might offer the right combination of mechanical, electrical, and hard work that could keep you busy, but not break the bank with expensive specialist work? Find this 1971 Jensen Interceptor 2 offered for $9000 in Seattle, WA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Manual Swapped: 2001 Audi S8 Quattro

If you are a car guy and have never enjoyed the Robert De Niro and Jean Reno classic Ronin (1998) you need to schedule yourself a few hours and pick up a copy on Amazon.  The D2 generation Audi S8 was the feature car that was driven in anger by Skipp Sudduth's nerdy hacker/driver character who insists on getting a custom nitrous system and then hauls the giant sedan through small cobblestone covered French streets.  It is fantastic -- and you can watch one of the S8 scenes in a clip on youtube here.  After watching Ronin a few times, you'll get the kind of itch that only an all-wheel-drive V8 powered Audi can solve...and this next one is a bit janky, but it does have a manual gearbox swapped in from another Audi. Find this 2001 Audi S8 Quattro offered for $6800 near Minneapolis, MN. Tip from Cory.

Cummins Diesel Hot Rod: 1950 Chevrolet Pickup

There are two categories of cool cars in the world. The first is cars that are cool because they are fast/rare/unique and everybody knows it -- think Corvette ZO6, Shelby Mustangs, Dodge Demons, Ferraris and the like...the second group are cars that are cool because nobody knows what the heck they are looking at.  This next car is so far into that second group it is coming out the backside. Find this 1950 Chevrolet Pickup offered for $6500 in Piggott, AR via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Rare 6-Speed: 2013 BMW 328i F30

The sixth generation BMW 3-series (F30 sedan, F31 wagon, F36 Gran Turismo sportback hideous monster) was released for the 2011 model year with an inexplicably named 4-series F32 two-door coupe.  Compared to the outgoing E90/91/92 3-series the new F30/31/32/33/34/35/36 was faster, more comfortable, longer, and wider...but you've got to wonder if the additional electronic gizmos and fancified stuff makes it less fun to drive? Today we've got a rare manual transmission version offered for a decent price -- buy it and let us know how it compares to a well preserved E46 ZHP 6-spd.  Find this 2013 BMW 328i offered for $15,500 in Hartford, CT via craigslist. Tip from Art C.

Mercury Rising: 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis 5-Spd

The Ford Crown Victoria (and its sister cars at Lincoln and Mercury, the Town Car and Grand Marquis respectively) was a big body on frame beast built for the fleet car market.  Cops, security guards, limo drivers, and old people put billions of miles on the 1.5 million examples that rolled off Fords production lines from 1993-2012...but the biggest downside from the perspective of a guy like me was the lack of a manual gearbox.  It's no Miata, but that doesn't mean I can't try? This next example finally has the gearbox that'll let you give it a try. Find this 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis offered for $4900 in Annapolis, MD via craigslist. Tip from Eric.

Ford V8 Giant Killer: 1965 MG MGB

You know what is better than taking a fancy-shamncy sports car with dual electric motors and a huge car payment to your local track day? Well...most anything...because wadding your Ferramginesla into turn 9 at Willow Springs isn't fun...but driving a pile of crap custom that is faster than overpriced "sports cars" is a bucket of  pygmy marmosets worth 'o' fun. Find this 1965 MG MGB offered for $6900 in Whittier, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

In Plain Sight: 1993 Ford Probe GT

I was watching some old TV show on my preferred streaming service the other day and it was USA Networks 2008-2012 In Plan Sight...yeah...I know.  Anyway, the main character is a US Marshal lady who puts people in the Federal Witness Protection Program -- and in the first episode she is driving a beat up 1990s Ford Probe.  My car senses tingled and I had to process this the right car for a US Marshal to be driving in 2008?  Why wouldn't she have a Crown Vic company car...and with her own money shouldn't she drive something better?  A few episodes in and it seriously fits the character well and then this tip came through. Find this 1993 Ford Probe GT offered for $2500 near Dallas, TX via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

White Fish: 1980 Chevrolet Chevette

Chevy's Chevette was a lightweight pipsqueak with two-digit horsepower and a big chip on its shoulder due to all the abuse it got in Jr High school. Chevette owners will say "just wait till the bad ones are gone and the good ones will be worth a fortune" but I'm not holding my breath on that one. But if you want a Chevette in your driveway...I think this next example is the way I'd go...clean...low miles...stock...and cheap. Find this 1980 Chevrolet Chevette offered for $3000 in Baltimore, MD via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

LT1 V8 + 6Spd: 1973 Nissan 240Z

Nissan's athletic 240Z was sold in the USA with a Datsun badge and a silky smooth inline-6 to go with its ninja-like reflexes.  For years, folks joked that Japanese cars would never be collectable, and 240Z prices hovered above scrap value, so many were (for better or worse) turned into hot rods. Today we've got one of those hot rods and it looks like it could use some freshening...but could be fun when done. Find this 1973 Nissan 240Z offered for $6500 in Phoenix, AZ via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Cheapest Around: 2004 Volkswagen R32

The Volkswagen Golf MkIV was sold from 1999-2006 around the world, but it wasn't until the 2004 R32 edition that a true performance version was born.  The R32 took most of its components from the 3.2 liter Audi TT, including engine, transmission and suspension, but it maintains the Golf level of useability and has a cool looking front air dam...wait a minute...this R32 has a Jetta front end...what's going on!??! At least the price is right. Find this 2004 VW R32 offered for $5600 in Los Gatos, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Mini Cooperino: 2002 Mini Cooper S Truck

Whenever I run into a late model Mini Cooper pickup truck (Cooperchero...Minimino?) it is usually one of the RedBull promotional vehicles that has been stripped of its giant can of caffeine and ground bull testes...but those ex-RedBull cars are all automatics, so it is nice to find a Mini Cooperino that has both an S logo and a manual gearbox. Find this 2002 Mini Cooper S Truck offered for $4950 in Laguna Niguel, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Korvmaro Kustom: 1963 Chevrolet Corvair V8

The Corvair is one of the few aircooled classics from the 60s that you can buy for a reasonable amount of money and drive around everyday (helps if you live in a place that is easy on weather.)  It had an advanced independent rear suspension under that aircooled engine out back...but today everything is amok and this Corvair is powered by a front mounted small block V8 and features a stick beam rear axle!! I don't know if this is an upgrade or downgrade. Find this 1963 Chevrolet Corvair V8 offered for $16,500 in Longview, CA via craigslist.
