Don't Call It A Turdcel: 1989 Toyota Tercel

What could be better than driving a high mile version of a classic Japanese coupe with a manual gearbox and some sweet 80s style?  Yeah...getting that same car with low miles and in mint condition for peanuts. Find this 1989 Toyota Tercel offered for $5700 in South San Francisco, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

From the seller:

1989 Toyota Tercel

condition: good
cylinders: 5 cylinders
fuel: gas
title status: clean
transmission: manual

Hello we are selling our 1989 Toyota Tercel with only 27k original miles we are the original owners had this car since new is been garage kept non smoker all original no accidents runs excellent just passed smog 5speed 4 cylinder great on gas easy fun car to drive

See a better way to drive something with low miles and high WTF appeal?

  1. Doubt anyone is going to find one nicer than this. My question is, of all the cars to garage, rarely drive, keep all original, etc.... why this car? :D

  2. Wouldn't mind having that to keep down the miles on my truck, but I'd work it like a rented mule.

  3. Damn $5700 hope not one farted in the turdcel

  4. I'm a little baffled as to why someone would bother to keep an entry-level Toyota pristine as well. It's like buying a Yaris new, and sticking it in the garage, only pulling it out for a wash, and coffee run once a week for the next forty years. Weird.
At least, with this creampuff, you'll probably draw the biggest crowd at the next cars and coffee: "Corvette, Porsche, Porsche, GTR,*yawn* Gen IV Supra....hey! Look! An 80's Tercel! Haven't seen one of those in twenty years!

  5. My friend had one in college. Fun to drive, manual everything, very light. Snap oversteer when you pushed it too!!

    1. The earlier 1982–1986 version would be fun with rear wheel drive and the vast assortment of Toyota engines that would fit, but this is FWD and is pretty to look at if you like looking at things like this.

Someone should hook up the seller with one of the movie car companies. Ever wonder why all the cars in the background of movies are fairly high spec cool cars? It's because the uncool cars have all been used up and junked.

    2. Actually, the first gen (L-10, 1978-1981) and second gen (L-20, 1982-1986) Tercels were all front front-wheel drive, aside from a handful of AWD models produced for the JDM.

    3. You might be thinking of the P-60 Starlet from 1978 to 1984. Those were rear-drive and a lot of fun to flog.

  6. Tercel 2dr Coupe Std 5-Sspeed $7,338 MSRP-$5700 = only $54.60/year depreciation. Hmmmmmmmm.

  7. just thinking? most car guys would not buy one in 1989, so why would you buy it now?
