Suspension by Lotus: 1989 Isuzu I-Mark RS

The Isuzu I-Mark (I Mark, you Jane!) is part of the GM '80s compact car family, built by Isuzu but marked by GM, known as the Gemini.  The styling was started by noted Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro noted for such designs as the DeTomaso Mangusta, Iso Griffo, 'the' Delorean, Ferrari 250GT. The little I-Mark wasn't a bad looking design for the maestro, but late changes demanded by the bottom line driven bean counters at GM caused such a tiff with the Italian that he disavowed any relationship with the car. Regardless, they make for an interesting cheap classic that anybody could drive. Find this 1989 Isuzu I-Mark RS offered for $4,500 in Rocklin, CA via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Hello, I’m selling my running restoration project Isuzu I-mark RS. Runs and drives with a rebuilt 4XE1 1.6L engine and clean title. This is the fully loaded RS model with the larger engine, Lotus suspension, Recaro seat package, rear wing, skirts, front and rear bumpers, and sunroof. Also has A/C which is not working at the moment. The engine came from a donor car of the same trim and year. Recaro seats are in perfect shape, BTW. The chassis was originally from the east coast and had a lot of surface rust which was taken back to bare metal and recoated with chassis grade epoxy and paint (not bed liner).

All fuel and brake hardliners were replaced, the rear trailing axle was replaced, and the gas tank was professionally resealed and replaced... thanks salty east coast roads! Tags out of date roughly 6 months, buyer responsible for smog. This has been a restoration process for my dad and I but due to space issues, I have to let it go. Will come with a spare engine, trans, bumpers, fenders, front suspension, and brakes from the donor. Towing is recommended, thanks! $4,500 OBO

See another car that needs some assembly?

  1. Cool, rare, and unusual, but unfortunately, I think the cons outweigh the pros on this one, at least at this price.

The rust and rust repairs are of concern, but also the lapse in registration and refusal to smog test the car. California mandates that smog testing be done by the seller, so if this person is pushing it onto the buyer, you know there's an issue or two.

Plus, no mention of what work still needs to be done to the car. Maybe it is just a garage space issue, but it sounds like a resto project that hit a few too many obstacles and someone threw in the towel. My bet is this will become a track-only car for the next owner.

You'd be much better off buying the GTI that ran here on Tuesday for about the same price. Parts availability and mechanical and club support are far superior for the VW. It looks like someone already jumped on that car because the CL post was deleted.
