Now Better: 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The NB generation Mazda MX-5 was released in 1998 as an upgrade to the apex hunting 2-seat roadster for the masses. The MX-5 was originally launched in the US market as the Miata in 1989 just as the classic two seat European roadster market was imploding.  Sales of the MGB, Fiat Spider and Alfa Romeo Spider were either on their way down the drain or just a minute from slashdown.  At the time it may have looked foolish from the outside to release a car into a market that was drying up, but the folks at Mazda knew they had the recipe right.  The second generation MX-5 wasn't a huge change from the previous design, but it did feature updated RX-7 derived muscly looks and more power from the 1.8 liter BP 4-banger. Find this 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata offered for $4,990 in Clearwater, FL via Hemmings. Tip from BP.

  1. The best looking Miata IMHO

    1. Worst IMHO, but they do look good when modded with the right setup. Looks are subjective. For me its NA > NC > ND > NB

    2. Definitely subjective. For me it's Modded NA>ND>NA>NB>NC

  2. Not a Miata expert, but looks like a great little car for the price point.

  3. Full disclosure, I have an NA Miata. I used to agree, then after some car-porning I found the NA to be better looking when you add all the mods people add like flares, spoilers, wheels, roll bar, etc. Mine is a Black/Tan. I've added all sorts of things like FM suspension, bronze wheels, and many other "keep it running" bits. These are getting to be old cars and can take a lot of weekend work to keep them going. My next project is probably clutch by the weird noise it just started making.

    /Ok a lot of car-porning...don't judge me!

  4. I do like the looks of this better then current gen Miata looked at a couple Monster Miata's in the past never had the scratch to buy one back in the day.

  5. Yeah, it's a dealer, but maybe a warranty also? Impressed with some other 'wares too:
'97 Buick from FL cheap Daily Driver, and no, no relationship.
    I just liked the Miata.

  6. Grassroots did a all model turbo comparison. It was a good read.
