French Fried: 1990 Peugeot 405 Mi16

The Peugeot 405 was a Pininfarina designed sedan from the French automaker Peugeot S.A., built from 1987 through 1997.  Actually, they still make a halal version of the 405 in Iran and Egypt for local consumption, but the car was replaced by the 406 in Europe and by the early 1990s the entire Peugeot lineup was pulled from the US market. The Mi16 version was the sportiest of the 405 lineup, not exactly something you'd phone home about...but beggars can't be choosers...I guess. Find this 1990 Peugeot 405 Mi16 offered for $8250 in Great Falls, VA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

A WRX By Any Other Name: 2005 Saab 9-2X Aero

The Saab 9-2X (aka the Saabaru) tones down some of the boy racer Japanime styling of the Subaru Impreza WRX, but keeps the neck-snapping turbocharged 2 liter flat-4 and asphalt-gripping all-wheel-drive.  Saab sold a few more than 10,000 examples of the odd little wagon and this next one is high mile example, but cheap. Time to lift it a few inches, add some mud tires, exo-skeleton, and skid plate for the ultimate Saabajaru.  Find this 2005 Saab 9-2X Aero offered for $4,400 in Fremont, CA via craigslist. 5-Speeds, All Fun: 1995 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo Z32

The 300ZX was a 2 door sports car from Nissan during the great Japanese sports car boom of the 1990s and featured a host of technology in a Isao Sono & Toshio Yamashita designed body.  In recent years the 300ZX's competitors (Supra, NSX, 993) have gone through their depreciation curves and the good original ones are commanding prices that exceed their original MSRP, but for some reason the 300ZX (and Mitsu's 3000GT/Dodge Stealth) have been floundering around in the cheap seats, but MAYBE, just MAYBE we are starting to see a budget of appreciation for the twin turbo V6 powered classics.  Get 'em while they're cheap.  Find this 1995 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo Z32 offered for $16,588 in Metairie, LA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Cheap Horsepower: 2006 Mazdaspeed6

There was a time when Mazda was just another entry into the world of cheap Japanese economy cars.  Most Mazdas built in the '80s & '90s had all the reliability, charisma, and fun factor of a dollar store enema kit, but sometime in the early '00s (that's pronounced "oughts" like "I oughta smack you for buying an automatic transmission") the product planners at Mazda decided that they needed to create fast cars that looked good...what a concept!! Today you can find used turbo Mazdas for REALLY cheap.  Find this 2006 Mazdaspeed6 offered for $5,600 in Gardena, CA via craigslist.

Ristretto Shot: 1992 Suzuki Cappuccino Turbo RHD

The Suzuki Cappuccino was introduced for the 1987 model year as an attempt to add some sportiness to the Suzuki lineup in native Japan.  In a photograph it looks like a Mazda MX-5 competitor, but with a total length of only 129 inches and a 1598 lb curb weight, the Cappuccino was closer to a go-kart and it conformed to Japan's Kei (Keijidosha light car) regulations that gave buyers a tax break and easier license/insurance requirements.  The Cino was never sold in North America, but a few made it across the pond and into the wilds of the US car market. Find this 1992 Suzuki Cappuccino Turbo offered for $5495 in Portland, OR via craigslist.

Sheep In A Wolf's Hoodie: 1966 Land Rover Defender on Pontiac Grand Prix Chassis

If you've ever spent time under a car, you know what you can get with a little hard work and a pair of donor cars.  All manner of crazy beasts start with a simple thought from some a mad scientist...but this next car is so perplexing that I'm going to have to give it the official Bearded Spock award and just hope it gets swallowed up in the next black hole to dimension Z.  Find this 1966 Land Rover Defender on a Pontiac Grand Prix Chassis offered for $2,500 in Taunton, MA via craigslist. Tip from Gregg.

Ultimate Survivor: 1998 Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Diesel Manual

This next car is less about what it is and more about what is ISN'T.  It isn't another late 90s Volkswagen with faded paint and oxidized plastic.  It isn't another diesel VW that doesn't run because the cost to repair is greater than its worth.  And it isn't another super slow diesel equipped with a slow shifting slushbox.  This car isn't a unicorn because of its original production volume or crazy option configuration, it is a unicorn because it survived the ravages of time with nary or door ding or hint of bumper rash.  The salvage title is the only thing holding this car back from being a $10k trailer queen.  Find this 1998 Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Diesel Manual offered for $4200 in Los Angeles, CA via craigslist.

Mary Kay: 1959 Edsel Ranger Sedan

This next car comes as a tip from DT tipper SecondMouse who writes: Do you know a Mary Kay lady who needs a new whip? Trying to find a car to match those plastic pink flamingos you put in the yard? Look no further than this 1959 Ford Edsel Ranger, sensibly priced at $12,500 OBO.

Fiberfab Aztec 7: 1966 Alfa Romeo Carabo

The Alfa Romeo Carabo was a Marcello Gandini of Gruppo Bertone designed concept car that not only perfected wedge styling but also was equipped with wicked scissor doors..but you can't afford one if you could find one for sale, so why not get the Walmart version -- something called the Fiber Fab Aztec 7 that included most of the wedge-i-ness and a set of gull wing doors.  Find this 1966 Alfa Romeo Carabo Fiber Fab Aztec 7 offered for $6,000 in Sherman Oaks, CA via craigslist.

Future Classic? 1986 Shelby Dodge Charger

Time to highlight a limited production turbocharged hatchback '80s machine because they are cheap and fun!  The '80s Dodge Charger was a Dodge Omni masquerading as a Charger - an emasculated version of a once brutal tire burning muscle machine...until Carroll Shelby got his 10-gallon hat involved and made a hot version.  Anything with the legendary Texas chicken farmer's name on the side (and the seats, glove box door, belts..etc) is probably gonna be worth more than scrap value in the future, so get this one while it is cheap! Find this 1986 Shelby Dodge Charger offered for $1900 in Boise, ID via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Wassergekühlt: 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Convertible

The Porsche 944 was another chapter in the watercooled front engine Porsche sport coupe saga that started in the late 1970s with the 928...but the 944 is in essence a beefed up replacement for the 924.  The 944 is actually one of the better cars of the 924/944/968 extended family to pick up from a cost/drivability/fun perspective because they have been (mostly) shunned by the hipsters over at Lufthgek...Lufget...Looofgeekcult....Luftwafflehouse...Luftgekühlt...because of the lack of luft in the gekuhlt.  Find this 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Convertible offered for $16000 in Mercer Island, WA via craigslist. V8 Mid Engine Custom: 1966 Chevrolet Corvair

The Chevrolet Corvair was a world changing car when introduced in 1960.  Its combination of subtle styling, aircooled alloy flat-6 out back and unibody construction was a fantastic machine that was the unfortunate recipient of the attention of a savvy young lawyer/politician named Ralph Nader who needed to make a name for himself.  But if a stock Corvair caused Mr Nader to write a book and then sue GM, then this next modified mid-engine V8 Corvair would have caused him to crapped his pants and run screaming for mommy. Find this 1966 Chevrolet Corvair offered for $10,000 in Fountain Hills, AZ via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Red, White & Green: 1974 GMC Sierra Grande Camper Special

What's a 'good ole' pre-smog 3/4 ton pickup worth these days?  The seller seems pretty straightforward ('cept he cain't spell breaks) and includes good shots of all the little rust areas.  On the plus side, old 'Murican trucks are SUPER easy to restore, you can buy anything you need for carpet, vinyl, headliner at your local UFO or Keyston,  As for the exterior, you leave it, and you do whatever you want to the engine exhaust.  Parts couldn't be easier to come by than for a Chebby pickup.  Find this 1974 GMC Sierra Grande Camper Special offered for $6,400 in Rancho Peñasquitos (I don't believe Rancho Penisqitos is a real place...but I could be wrong) via craigslist.

Low Miles: 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder

The 3rd generation (W30) Toyota MR2 Spyder was the last version of Toyota's mid engine runabout to be sold anywhere in the world.  It was a decent handling little car and I recall driving one new at a dealer's lot back around the year 2000; it was light and superbly balanced.  Prices are cheap today on the used market, but you don't find many with only 27k miles on the this one is cool. Find this 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder offered for $8000 in San Diego, CA via craigslist.

Grey Zombie: 1979 Mazda RX-7 GS

I'm all about rooting for the underdog, because who doesn't love a good underdog.  But when does a dog go from underdog to total basket case?  And when does a total wreck become a project car? Find this 1979 Mazda RX-7 GS offered for $1500 in San Jose, CA.

6-Speed Touring: 2008 BMW 328i Wagon E91

Yeah...I know.  You could get an E46 M3 with fewer digits flipped on the odo, and you could get a high mileage STI or Legacy GT Wagon for the same pile of dough...but this car calls to the people who remember when BMW built the best luxury/sport wagons with manual gearboxes on the planet.  Those days are LONG gone...and the manual gearbox has become a punchline and an anti-theft device...BUT if I had to pick ONE car to daily drive this car every single day of my driving'd look a lot like this 2008 BMW 328i E91 wagon offered for $12,500 in Richmond, VA via craigslist. Tip from Jeff.

Danger Zone: 1969 Sunbeam Arrow

This next car hits all the warning signs of a disaster in the is sitting at a body shop and needs ("probably" according to the seller) an engine rebuild..but don't worry because some of the disassembly has already been done for you.  Bonus spare radiators in the boot.  And a planned swap from Sunbeam badging to Iranian Khodro Paykan...all based in the phenomenal British Rootes group build quality of the late 60s. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?!  Find this 1969 Sunbeam Arrow offered for $4500 located conveniently near the Fremont BART Station (maybe you could fly/BART in and drive it home?) in SF Bay Area, CA.
