Project Car: 1964 Volvo 122S Amazon

The Volvo 122S/Amazon is a 50's styled classic Volvo that normally doesn't cost an arm/leg to purchase, drive or restore. Prices have gone up for the "sporty" 2-door version in the past few years, but you can still find a 4-door 122S for next to nothing...and that is a good thing indeed.  Find this 1964 Volvo 122S Amazon offered for $3,500 in Ramona, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

From the seller:

I am selling my favorite car. I need to relocate and cannot take this wonderful car with me. Whenever I drive it, people honk, stare, point, etc. I have never owned anything like this. This Volvo is a great piece of motoring history and has a classic look.

The car is a 1964 Volvo 122s also known as an Amazon. I have lots of extra parts. The car sits most of the time, but always fires right up. There is a clutch leak, but I think that is because I tried to install a new clutch hydraulic cylinder thingy. (I have included a picture of the part below.) I don't think I did it right. But I am not very handy. I bought this when I was working from home and had lots of time to tinker. But that is not the case anymore.

There is a dent in the front driver side fender. It was there when I bought it. There is a little rust on the passenger side below the back door. Not much. But the car is in great shape.

I have swapped out the front suspension assembly to a 1968. It also has the upgraded motor. This is a manual car. I have a bunch of polished parts that I have added to the engine compartment. There is no overdrive in the car.

I put Honda S2000 seats in, with custom brackets on the floor. The license plate is an original 1964 one that I bought and got transferred to the car. All the glass is great.

This car needs a little work, but is a good car that can drive away. I replaced the back shocks with Bilsteins and upgraded all the rear bushings to IPD blue ones. The driveshaft was balanced and redone by Oceanside Driveline. I have a front spoiler that will be included. I also have some new mirrors with led turn signals in them. Lots of little things that I wanted to do to the car.

The car is dusty right now, but when you wash and polish her, she really turns heads. I have included a couple photos of that.

I am asking for $3,500. Come get my baby and have a great time driving her around. The registration is out of date, but it is not an expensive amount. It just came due in February. I think it is $90, so I will take that off the price for you to register it. So I am asking $3,400.

So what are you waiting for? Text me or call me. Let's talk about this awesome car.

See a better way to drive an Amazon?

  1. Amazons are wonderful, tough cars with cool styling that never gets hard on the eyes. Haven't owned one, but I've driven a few both in Europe and the US. In many ways, they are reminiscent of a '53 - '54 Hudson Jet. Cool!

  2. Gee the LAST thing you would spend money on are silly wheels, so this must have everything else taken care of , am I right?

    Hmm... apparently not.

"Whenever I drive it, people honk, stare, point, etc." Sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes not so good.

BTW have you ever noticed how many different songs are named "Ramona"?

  3. I have fun DD'ing mine. Haven't gone for silly wheels yet. Can't go wrong for the price.

  4. Wheels: ugly. Interior: trashed. Motor: not rebuilt. So, like 90% of CL vehicles, he is selling it, before another expensive repair pops up. Now, if you want a really cool Volvo, buy a 544 or a P 1800 !!!

    1. $1000 would clean up that interior - new OEM rubber mats, door card and dash topper. Sell the fugly wheels and recoup some cash. Motor - may not need rebuild. These are bone-simple machines to work on. Offer $2500 and enjoy the ride.
