4-Speeds 12-Carbons 24-Hyrdogens: 1974 Mercedes Benz 240D

It doesn't take much to be faster on the road than a Mercedes-Benz 240D with a slushbox automatic transmission...but an easy upgrade from danger zone slow to moderately livable matching your 62 horsepower oil furnace with a 4-speed manual box.  I've driven both versions for many miles and can say that the 4-speed manual feels as fast as the 300D with the slushbox...and that isn't as bad as it sounds. Find this 1974 Mercedes Benz 240D offered for $5000 in Modesto, CA via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Amazon Prime Day: 1967 Volvo Amazon 123GT

When the talking heads on the internet starting carrying on about Amazon Prime day, I had to think about it.  Because the regular 122S version of the Amazon isn't prime...but then I remembered the 123GT version...which is ALMOST prime, but it is divisible by 3 & 41, which are both prime numbers and in nerd speak we call it semi-prime or biprime.  Anyway, I don't need any worthless electronic devices littering my house and listening to my private conversations (how long before the thought police start to use Alexa/Siri to find non conformists and turn them into Soilent Green...huh?  10 years? 20 -- whoa, who let Vince off his meds...quick distract him with some Saab Inca alloys and hit him with an injection of fluoride...aggggg...we now return to our regular programming), but I do need a classic Volvo. Find this 1967 Volvo Amazon 123GT offered for $2,500 in Seattle, WA via craigslist. Tip from Zach.

Supercharged Maus: 1948 Fiat Topolino

The name Topolino means little mouse in Italian and is actually what they call Mickey Mouse in Italy.  The Topolino was named because the early versions have head lights that sprouted from the fenders like Mickey Mouse ears.  And this next one has an awesome set of whisker-headers to complete the mouse look.  Find this 1948 Fiat Topolino offered for $15,000 in Miami, FL via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Nice Bumpers: 1985 BMW 325e Euro

Not too many years ago, you could pick up a clean BMW E30 for reasonable money.  It is a completely different market for these cars in 2018.  Nice condition plastic bumper cars are very difficult to find under ten grand.  Today's feature is a interesting euro import that could be a really nice car with a little handiwork and ingenuity.  It is equipped with the low revving diesel-esque 2.7 "eta" inline 6 engine.  All is not lost because the hot-rod solution is to fit an "i" engine cylinder head onto the "eta" block to create a 2.7 stroker.  The "i" cylinder heads are plentiful and not overly pricey.  Without proof of it being done, you should change out the timing belt and water pump on on these engines right away so this would not be a ton more extra work.  Find this 1985 BMW 325e for sale in West Haven, CT for $4,000 via craigslist.

Supercar Red: 1989 Lotus Esprit Turbo

Imagine you are a successful 50-something car fanatic and you've decided it is time for  your supercar. Do you buy an older Ferrari 355 for $50k or a newer Porsche 911...or do you save a pile of cash and pickup something more exclusive and far less douchey? Like this 1989 Lotus Esprit Turbo offered for $19,500 in Des Plaines, IL via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Roadmonster's Uncle: 1978 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon

She's a beaut Clark! There has to be a story about how and why a forty year old Caprice wagon from metro Boston area looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor.  This maroon long roof is blessedly free of wood grain side paneling and has jarring shade of red interior.  If you wanted a large car that could haul sheets of plywood and be easily be hotrodded this third generation Caprice should be on your shopping list.  Find this 1978 Chevrolet Caprice for sale in Warren, MA for $5,500 via craigslist.

NACA Ducted: 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo

The Porsche 924 was first released in 1976 as an example of what a simple engine and light chassis can achieve together. Unfortunately, a decent quantity of negative press has been heaped on the Audi van/sedan engine used to power the lithe little coupe...but in 1979 Porsche was kind enough to introduce a turbocharged version with a few more ponies and a sweet NACA duct on the hood for extra emphasis.  Think of it as the automotive styling equivalent of an exclamation point.  924.  924 Turbo! Find this 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo offered for $5900 in Las Vegas, NV via craigslist.

28 Ways to E: 1988 BMW 528e

The BMW 5-series lineup in 1988 was filled with a variety of choices starting with the movie star spec M5 then moving to the real estate investor's 535i and finally the professor's 528e.  This next example isn't just another 528e, because it is equipped with a 5-speed, has nice paint, and a reasonable asking price. Find this 1988 BMW 528e offered for $3,200 in East Kingston, NH via hemmings. Tip from BarbPaddles.

Alfa Romeo Jigsaw Puzzle- Two Milano's and 164

Getting old is a bitch and having too many needy Alfa Romeo's can put a real damper on one's golden years.  Today's seller has a trio of Alfa's that are all interdependent on one another to make one decent ride.  The 3.0 Milano Verde is the most valuable car of the of the bunch and would be the recipient of parts from a Milano Platinum and 164 engine donor.  Parts cars are always the most cost efficient way to restore cars on the cheap, but the issue here is transporting all of these cars home which will likely limits buyers to New England area only.  Find these three V6 Alfa Romeo's for sale in Gorham, ME for $1,500 via craigslist.

Crown Vic Swap: 1972 Ford F100

It is entirely possible to swap an entire Ford F100 body onto a late model Ford Crown Victoria frame, such that you end up with a car that looks like a classic Ford pickup, but drives like a P71 interceptor, which isn't much better than a classic pickup, but rack-n-pinion and fuel injected V8 is just a seriously complex body-frame swap away...OR you could buy one that is already done. Find this 1972 Ford F100 offered for $9995 near Portland, OR via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Ultimate Cheapskate Machine: 1983 BMW 320i

The E21 3-series is the middle child stuck between two BMW icons: 2002 and E30.  The 320i was not a fast car when new and could be considered painfully slow by 2018 standards.  The good news is that there are still sane asking prices out there for these unlike the newer E30. In addition, the 320i's have unmistakable vintage BMW styling that is arguably more handsome than a E30. A BWM 320i certainly will not be confused with being anything other than a BMW.  Find this 1983 BMW 320i for sale in Bel Air, MD for $2,300 via craigslist.

They See Me Rollin: 1981 Ford Fairmont Futura 351W

A stock 80s Ford Fairmont 2-door won't get your blood pumping even in the sweet fastback-ish Futura trim (similar to a Mercury Zephyr Z-7...if that helps).  Even the healthiest 5-liter V8 version only pushed 139 horsepower at a leisurely 3600 rpm...but that's nothing that a crate motor swap won't fix.  Find this 1981 Ford Fairmont Futura 351W offered for $8,500 in Detroit, MI via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Benz-Liger: 1979 Mercedes 240D

Enthusiasm for WVO grease cars seems to have waned considerably from the peak in the early 2000s.  Today's unique two door w123 Mercedes does have one trend that enthusiasts still can't seem to get enough of: car in the front and truck in the back or Camino-ization.  There are not any new Camino style cars sold in the USA right now.  A cottage industry converting late model Jetta's has sprung up to feed the void left by the retirement of the Ranchero, Camino, Brat, Baja, Rampage, and VW Caddy.  This grease burning diesel Camino's lack of computers will make every doomsday prepper's heart flutter.  Find this 1979 Mercedes 240D for sale in Washago, Ontario for $1,600 via kiijiji.

Long Beach Grand Prix Celebrity Racer: 1991 Toyota Celica GT

The Toyota Grand Prix in Long Beach was an annual Pro/Celebrity race in Toyota street cars that was first run in 1977.  The race has always had lots of carnage and is typically more fun to watch than the Indy/IRL/ChampCar parade of high-powered wing-equipped spec-chassis 'race-cars' held later in the day.  Unfortunately Toyota pulled their support of the race when they moved their USA HQ from Torrance, CA to somewhere in Texas, but the glory of the Pro/Celebrity races lives on in spectacular crashes (like the one where George Lucas is punished for Episodes 1,2,3) s and old used race cars. Find this 1991 Toyota Celica GT Racer here on eBay bidding for $5,500 in Mundelein, IL with 4 days to go.

Ford GT-40 Replica: 1969 FT Bonito Kit Car by Fiberfab

The world of GT-40 replicars runs the gambit from atrocity to travesty, but in this next car we might have found a bit of a gem.  The FT Bonito was sold as a kit by Fiberfab and sold mostly in Germany and the Netherlands according to various furrin language websites. The FT used a VW Beetle chassis and a polyester body styled to look 2 parts GT-40 and one part Opel Manta.  Find this 1969 Ford GT-40 FT Bonito Replica by Fiberfab offered for $10,000 in Rancho Cordova, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

7.2 Big Block: 1968 Plymouth Fury III

Some cars are all hat and no horse, but today's Plymouth is packing heat (literally no AC car here).  This Fury III has been fitted with the enthusiast's buffet: 440 big block, loud exhaust, B&M ratchet, and posi rear end.  Domestic sedans do not command big resale dollars so you can save up for for all gas which you will consume if you rack up any miles on this thirsty beast.  Find this 1968 Plymouth Fury III for sale in Bremerton, OR WA for $3,500 via craigslist.  Tip from fuel truck.
