Olds Swap: 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

Four cylinder Pontiac Fieros and Grumman USPS delivery vehicles were both saddled with the same push rod Iron Duke engine from General Motors.  This engine had no business being in a sports car and groaned like a constipated hippo when you hit the loud pedal.  Fiero's are ripe for engine swaps and many V8 conversions have been featured on these pages.  Today's example took the swap road less traveled with the sophisticated GM DOHC four cylinder engine called the Quad Four.  The engine was quite potent in W41 trim making 190 horsepower in the 1992-93 Old Achieva SCX and Old Cutlass Calais Quad 442.  Find this 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT for sale in Worcester, MA for $4,800 via craigslist.

The Fiero has 155,000 on the body and miles are not listed on the engine.  The seller says it runs and drives mint, handles great, and is very fun to drive.  The specs or details on the engine swap are not given, but it does have a proper manual transmission of unknown origin.

The 17" aftermarket wheels are a plus two fitment over stock.  Lowering springs have been fitted and drop the ride height two inches.  Four wheel disc brakes are mentioned in the listing, but the 84-87 unvented disc set up were barely considered adequate and were eventually upgraded for the 1988 model year.

The car sports fresh metallic black paint and smoked tail lights.  The seller makes reference to these cars becoming more and more collectible.  Is that sentiment wishful thinking or does it have any merit?

Cory is almost ready to start putting some miles on his 1995 Mercedes C36 AMG.

  1. The thought that these had the same engine as a postal truck makes me way sadder than it should.
