Coffee Brake: Off Topic

Happy Friday -- time for another off topic Coffee Brake. Let's open up the comments to anything you might want to discuss. Go ahead. Discuss among yourselves.

  1. It is really nice to see someone other than Mercedes win F1 races this year. Who else wants to see Kimi win another championship? Would be a huge slap on th face for Vettel and Hamilton.

    1. It was nice to see a first time winner, but the last race was a real snoozer. I FFWD'd thru most of it.

    2. Certainly glad to see some variety on the top step of the podium. I like Kimi, but there is one thing about him that gives me gas: he will drive his race back in third, fourth, or fifth place, making no impression on the car ahead of him, and then six laps from the end of the race, he will post the fastest lap. What the heck was he doing for the rest of the time?

  2. I have been following the story about the BMW Car Club of America chapter that has banned "driver-assist" equipped cars from track days:

    https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/bmw-car-club-chapter-bans-some-new-bimmers-from-the-track/

This has got me thinking about how such cars will react in an accident situation, if a skilled driver attempts to continue controlling the vehicle. Some things that a skilled driver might do in reaction to an accident happening around him or her probably will violate some of the autonomous rules that the car is programmed to follow. So, could a semi-autonomous vehicle put a skilled driver in an unrecoverable situation?

  3. It's Friday afternoon. I could be so much more productive right now at home putting the final touches on my engine install in my ST185. Instead I'm stuck at work until I can pluck up enough courage to abandon my desk and call it a day....

  4. Last Week I went to a car auction at a funny little place near where I live. It is a town called casitas springs "Home of Johnny Cash"
A friend of mine owns the auction house and he gave me a heads up on a 1986 Mitsubishi Starion with 9,000 miles.
I tried to win it but a car dealer was bidding against me and won. He said he is going to put it on "ThaT" other site and get $16,000 for it. He got it for 5. It will be interesting to see it when it goes up for sale.
I am bummed I lost but it was exciting to bid nonetheless.

He gets some crazy stuff at his place

    1. That's an awesome looking Starion. I'm curious how much extra coin this guy gets for it with a wider Ba(uc)T(ion) audience. Surely, someone will pay $7 - $8k for that as it sits. $16k sounds like boastful/wishful thinking.

    2. I dunno, there is something weird in the water on that site. A couple of Honda Trail 90's sold for 4 - 5K. We had one when I was a kid. We hated that thing and beat it mercilessly. It was a "girly" motorcycle to a 12 year old in the late '70's. $500 would be the most I'd pay for one.

  5. Went to lunch with Mr. DT E-i-C Vince himself today; let him drive my newly completed B230FT swapped turbo brick. He didn't even talk one ounce of smack about it!

Very pleased with this engine swap; the wife and I drove it from LA to Davis, CA and back last weekend for the (mostly) annual Volvo show there, had a great trip, and was able to cruise at 75mph and blast up the Grapevine with no issues.

    1. Just sold my 92 245 this week - I'm brickless for the first time in 15 years. Still in the fold with a 122s longroof, but sans brick is...weird.

    2. Oh, and jealous that my neighbor picked up this CB450K6(?) for $1000 last week - needs new coils or points/condenser, but man.

I'm slowly working through reassembly of my CB400f engine that I disassembled to fix the cam chain tensioner lock bolt that I stupidly sheared. Painted some of the covers last evening.

    3. I wait in vain...still...for Evil Genius to finish the 16v swap on the 242gt he has had since May of 2013. I'm not sure that brick will ever find its way into my garage :(

  6. A friend of mine bought a Model S and I had a chance to drive it last weekend. The acceleration was pretty amazing and the regenerative braking was really weird. I'd find myself lifting for a stop sign like it was a typical ICE automatic and then having to speed back up to get to the stop line. The funniest part was when he went to back it out of the garage and I said "Neil your car is rolling backwards!". "Yes, I'm backing it up." He couldn't get the autopilot to work, he thought it was that it was having a hard time with the rain and worn lane markings in need of repainting that seem to be the new normal around town.

Interesting vehicle, but I'm sticking with my analog Miata.
