Impressive For Price: 1987 Porsche 944

The old adage of "you get what you pay for" couldn't be less true when it comes to vintage Porsche products.  Asking prices for 356 coupes have been high for decades, and recently the prices of 911s have skyrocketed into oblivion, but you can still find a deal on a watercooled front-engine Porsche if you pay attention.  Find this 1987 Porsche 944 offered for $6,200 in Pleasant Grove, UT via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Mid Week Match-Up: Land Rover

This week's Mid Week Match-Up, victim is tipper Scott who sent us a link for a Land Rover because his wife really wants a 110 series, but was thinking that this might do as a cheap alternative.  But, I'm not sure if this is the best way to start on the right foot for Land Rover ownership....

Cheap Style: 1999 Porsche 911

The 996 generation Porsche 911 was introduced for the 1999 model year with drastic changes to the exterior that included a swept back windshield, fried egg headlamps, and a tidy rear end -- but the biggest change was to the engine with the addition of watercooling.  Find this 1999 Porsche 911 here on eBay offered for $11,000 buy-it-now located in Costa Mesa, CA. Tip from Gielamonster.

Safari Ready: 1974 Volvo 142

If you find a true boxy Volvo fan they will tell you a few things. First, the 140/240/740 is the best car to have ever been built because it can be a: daily driving sedan, family wagon, race car, driftersporty 2-door classic, custom wagon, autocrosser...I think you get the picture.  But today, we've got a special treat for you, a safari ready box.  Find this 1974 Volvo 142 offered for $2,700 in Mobile, AL via craigslist.  Tip from Zach.

Is That Stock? 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage

The Chevrolet Monza was released for the 1975 model year on a chassis shared with the tiny Vega, but it was designed to have power from an exotic rotary GM-Wankel engine.  Unfortunately (or fortunately) the rotary was scrapped after GM engineers couldn't figure out that wankels are total piles of junk, so GM shoved a V8 inside and called it a day...except for the versions that were sent to Michigan Auto Techniques for the "Mirage" treatment.  Find this 1977 Chevrolet Monza Mirage offered for $13,000 in McHenry, IL via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!

Not Easy Being Green: 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88

Back when I was a kid in the early 70's, we thought American sedans were land barges, and one would never ever want to own one.  With curb weights of around 4,000lbs and lengths of 19ft, they are almost petite compared to the Bro Trucks and Mommy 'Burbans that clog the roads of today, and I find them strangely attractive.  Find this 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 for sale in Kirkland, WA for $5,500 via craigslist.

Sport Beans: 1980 Pontiac Firebird TransAm LS Swap

Marketing is the art of making something appear to be what it is not.  Let's take Sport Beans, for example. They are not sporty, or even beans -- in fact they are jelly beans from the makers of Jelly Bellys, and they are no more appropriate for an athlete to consume than a diabetic...but that doesn't stop them from selling versions that contain caffeine & vitamins -- all shipped in a pouch that says "Gluten Free" and "Made in USA." What this next car needs is some marketing...because a little lipstick would go a long way on this pig.  Find this 1980 Pontiac Firebird TransAm LS Swap offered for $5,900 in Irving, TX via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

11,750 RPM Commuter: 2007 Locost 7

The Lotus 7 epitomized Colin Chapman's philosophy of high performance through low weight and simplicity.  The original 7 was produced by Lotus from 1957 through 1972.  A cottage industry of 7 clones sprung up after production ended and exists to this day.  Very few of these clones are the same as the builders can be very opportunistic with the donor car parts used and drivetrains selected.   Today's Locost example is powered by a 2003 Yamaha R1 motorcycle engine backed up by a 6 speed sequential gearbox.  Find this 2007 Locost 7 for sale in Middlefield, CT for $10,000 via craigslist.

4-Wheel-Deal: 1990 Toyota Celica AllTrac

The Toyota Celica was an affordable 'sporty' coupe from Toyota, and quite frankly a horrible car once it made the switch from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive when the fourth generation Celica debuted in 1986.  The only notable exception is the All-Trac turbo cars that combined all-wheel-drive with a turbocharged 4-banger to put some fun back into the 4 wheeled washing machines from the company founded by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937.  This 5th generation (T180)  Find this 1990 Toyota Celica AllTrac here on eBay bidding for $4,500 located in Indianapolis, IN with 4 days to go.

KGB Black: 1979 Lada 2101 Zhiguli

The Lada/VAZ 2101 was compact sedan built by AvtoVAZ starting in 1970 for Eastern Bloc needs.  It doesn't have the reliability of a classic German car, the handling of a British classic, or the speed of something domestic, but it has the undeniable cool factor of a Soviet sedan.  Find this 1979 Lada 2101 Zhiguli offered for $10,500 in Marco Island, FL via craigslist.  Tip from Dascpcu.

BugeV8: 1961 Austin Healey Sprite

A few years ago we found an AWESOME V8 powered Bugeye Sprite at the Coronado Speed Festival and the seller was asking a pretty steep price for his well build treasure.  If that was a bit too rich, perhaps you'd prefer the 1/2 finished version for about a fifth of the price?  Find this 1961 Austin Healey Sprite Bugeye V8 offered for $4,500 in Milwaukee, WI via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!

Coffee Brake: Word Association

Happy Friday -- time for another Coffee Brake. Today, I'd like to play some DT commenter games.  Word association.  I will start with something and you guys continue the word association game in the thread below.

Olds Swap: 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

Four cylinder Pontiac Fieros and Grumman USPS delivery vehicles were both saddled with the same push rod Iron Duke engine from General Motors.  This engine had no business being in a sports car and groaned like a constipated hippo when you hit the loud pedal.  Fiero's are ripe for engine swaps and many V8 conversions have been featured on these pages.  Today's example took the swap road less traveled with the sophisticated GM DOHC four cylinder engine called the Quad Four.  The engine was quite potent in W41 trim making 190 horsepower in the 1992-93 Old Achieva SCX and Old Cutlass Calais Quad 442.  Find this 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT for sale in Worcester, MA for $4,800 via craigslist.

Callaway #23 of 184: 1987 Chevrolet Corvette Twin Turbo

What do you get when you mix one part 'Merican Vette, one part twin turbocharged power, and one part sketchy build quality?  The answer is obvious -- a cheap car that'll be the pants off everything else from its decade of birth if it doesn't blow up.  Find this 1987 Chevrolet Corvette Twin Turbo here on eBay  bidding for $8,700 reserve-not-met with a few hours to go, located in Las Vegas, NV.

Ol' Betsy: 1954 Chevrolet Pickup

Nobody respects a perfection condition shop truck.  If it doesn't have some dings and dents in the bed, then you aren't using the truck as it should be.  Perhaps this next pile of rust might be a bit too far gone for daily driving, but you could certainly justify the exposure to tetanus for a weekend Lowes Despot hauler.  Find this 1954 Chevrolet Pickup offered for $6,500 here on eBay buy-it-now or make-offer located in Sacramento, CA with 2 days to go.

Red, Right & True: 1995 Chevrolet Corvette

Would you eat a sandwich that was left outside overnight if it was a good deal?  What about moldy cheese or only slightly moldy cheese at a big discount over non-moldy cheese.  If you think that eating slightly spoiled food to save a buck, then why would you ever buy a new car?  Find this 1995 Chevrolet Corvette here on eBay offered for $13,900 buy-it-now or make-offer in Anaheim, CA with 16 days to go.

Just a Dash: 1989 Fiat Tipo DGT

When they work, we all love digital dashes - I think this is a foregone conclusion. But apparently those in charge of naming the Fiat Tipo DGT were so fond of their pixelated panel that they named the whole entire car for it; an admirable feat. Find this 1989 Fiat Tipo DGT for sale in Providence, RI for an undisclosed number of lira via craigslist. Tip from Carter.

Auction Watch: 2000 BMW Z3 M-Coupe

Find this 2000 BMW Z3 M-Coupe here on eBay bidding for $5,101 reserve-not-met with 6 days to go, located in Los Angeles, CA.

Future Classic: 2001 Honda S2000

The Mazda Miata might be the most famous of the modern Japanese convertibles, but the high production numbers and basic speed means it will always be the MGB of the future collector market, but the S2000...yes...it will be the Austin-Healey 3000.  Find this 2001 Honda S2000 here on eBay  offered for $13,500 buy-it-now or make-offer located in Rochester, NY.

Coughin or Coffin? 1970 Volkswagen Custom

It might be months from Halloween and the DT season of horrorods, but that didn't stop this next seller from putting what is probably the best looking coffin-car I've ever seen. And I don't say that lightly!  Find this 1970 Volkswagen Custom offered for $12,000 in Los Angeles, CA via craigslist. Tip from Sean S.
