Shining Star: 1968 BSA Royal Star A 50

Didn't we fight a war here in the U.S. about 240 years ago against royalty?  Yet what was called the Star in its home country, was called the Royal Star here in the U.S.  I guess BSA didn't have a GeoPol department back in the 60's.  Find this 1968 BSA Royal Star A 50 for sale in Lebanon, OH for $4,900 via craigslist.
Tip from FuelTruck.

The BSA A50 Star or Royal Star was powered by BSA's "new" breed of 500cc twin.  Some say that the need for new motors wasn't a preemptive move on the part of the Brits to meet the rising challenge from the East, but due to Lucas switching from manufacturing magnetos and generators to coils and alternators.  Either way, BSA's new twin was good for around 33 hp.  This bike's motor has been rebuilt along with the carb and transmission in the last 200 miles, so it has probably just begun to leak oil.

The bike has BSA's distinctive tank with chrome sides and offset filler and a reminder in case you have forgotten what you are riding.

This bike also has new tires (so new the nubs are still present) and new brakes.  The brakes on the A50 were single shoe drums and were criticized back in the day for being 7 inchers vs. 8 inchers on its bigger 650cc brother.  Some say this was just cheapness on BSA's part.

  1. As available and as relatively inexpensive as the stock pipes are, I suspect they would have a huge effect on the response to this bike. Would make a great little Sunday cruiser.

  2. Sorry cannot resist Bastard Stopped Again I have riddin a 441 Victor a few times it lived up to the Nickname and my Buck 25 was not heavy enough to start it most of the time but did make it whiz out the carb and spray me with gas.
