Mid Week Match-Up: Limited Edition

This week's Mid Week Match-Up, victim is a hypothetical person we shall call "Dwood" -- and the thing he needs is a fast/fun/daily driver for less than $10k, but it needs to be a unique car with very limited production...like no more than 1,000 examples sold in the USA.

Go.  Do your worst.  Find something limited.

  1. Man, that's a semi-tall order. Here is a 1990 Cadillac Allante for $8,950. About 2,500 where made, but less than 2,000 of them had the fancy shmancy digital tach.

    They made more than a 1,000 of these, but I had to post it cuz it looks sweet for the price. 1988 Porsche 944 S for $7,900.

  2. Saab production numbers are pretty low, a nice 9-3?

    1. even better, the last Saab 9-5, 2010-12 - 10,000 produced overall, but the one you want is the Aero - a lot fewer of those and in the US of A there couldn't be more than a hundred with a stick - not sure if Merica got the V6 (I6?) with nearly 300 hp, but there's probably only a couple dozen of those - AWD option, very likely single digits - i'm guessing

      gee, maybe i should buy one, eh Vince / CFlo / Hunsbloger / Gianni? - Aero prices here are around 10k, but that's quid, not greenbacks

    2. It is a shame that Saab died when it did. A classmate of mine had been just hired as head of design when Saab went down. He had some really neat ideas. I think might have been behind the above car.

    3. Jason something, right? Began with a "C"? Yeah, I've seen some of those drawings, very appealing. Where is he now?

      I also just saw an AWD Aero with a stick of which I speak, just the other day down the block from my house. Should have left a note under the wiper, I should have.

    4. Yup, Jason Castriota.
      When he was a student he drove a M3 and a Ducati. He also had ladies throwing them selves at him.
      Not a bad life.
      Got plucked out of school before graduating by Pininfarina and immediately designed some Ferraris.
      I guess he works at an independent studio in New York now.

  3. Jensen Healey has pretty low production numbers, ~10k for the whole run. The GT model fits the criteria, numbers wise (~500). I've always thought they looked a little odd though.

  4. Mercedes C36/C43 AMG fit the description

  5. OK, my hat's off to you if you use this thing as a daily driver, but it fits the other rules.

    There were only 306 of these imported to the US. And worldwide production was only 1843 total.

  6. I can't believe I found something
    2002 Ford Thunderbird Neiman Marcus Edition 200 made
    Neiman Marcus

    I almost bought a Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue Ducati 748. Pro Italia had one with low miles for like $3,000. It just didn't seem like a proper branding of a Ducati.

  7. You could always go for a 1992 Sunburst Yellow Miata. "Rare" color on a not rare car. Total produced was 1515.

  8. First thought, something JDM, yo!

    Second thoughts - less than 1000 Honda S2000s sold between 2009 and 2013
    Third thought - V70R manual? V. likely just about 1000 sold in the US over the model run - total production numbers for the V70 R from 2004 through 2007:

    2004= 1,565
    2005 = 674
    2006 = 823
    2007 = 345

    With the 2004 split as:
    V70 R Auto = 1024
    V70 R Man = 541

    Assuming a similar 2:1 split,
    04 = 541
    05 = ~225
    06 = ~280
    07 = ~115
    Total: ~1,160

    Go forth and hoon, young man.

    Well, I'm a day too late for the auction, but you can get a nice e23 745i for that price point. Here's one with 31k miles that went for $7600 yesterday. No more than a couple hundred were brought into the states via gray market importing.

  10. I would be looking for only one car.. 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. 1000 total production for 1992, AWD turbocharged fun for WAY less then $10,000. You get 90% of the fun of a Mitsubishi EVO for 1/5th the price. Manual trans only.

    1. Was gonna post that before the 745i but balked when I saw the 1991 totals were way more than that. Also, the stat I showed had 1001 for 1992---LOL. Nice choice either way!

  11. What about the Citroen D Special - sure, more than 1000 imported/made, but how many you going to see around in DD status? <20 nationwide, I'd wager.

  12. Not sure about the import numbers, but the zippy and price is right. 2003 Mercedes CLK
