Thursday Twister: Looks Good Parked

Today's Thursday Twister subject is all about the show and no go.  Find us the best car for looking at, but it is sorta terrible to drive. What car do you want in your garage, but not on the road?

My selection is the Subaru SVX, which promised speed with its Giorgetto Giugiaro design, all-wheel-drive, and flat-6 powerplant...but failed to deliver like a broken down UPS truck. The engine wasn't very powerful, the chassis was dead 'n' heavy, and the only available transmission was a recalcitrant 4-speed slushbox.  Here on eBay is a cheap example bidding for $510 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go, located in Waupaca, WI.

What do you want to look at, but not touch? Comments below.

  1. Maserati Biturbo or DeLorean for me.

  2. SVX is the perfect choice. I was super excited when I got the chance to test drive a pretty good example near me, until I actually drove it. Vague and heavy and pretty cumbersome in turns. I would also like to submit the Volvo P1800. Looks like James Bond but drives like James May. But it's so achingly pretty that I couldn't help but buy one anyway.

  3. From what I have heard, De Tomaso Mangusta.

  4. funny you should ask - i had a dream the other night about being offered one of these in great original condition - cash out - then someone reminded me there would be no seat belts, no power, no cornering, and really no safety features of any kind - did i go for it or bail? - dunno, i woke up

    2. I owned a Mark 2 for several years. Looks great parked, but also is "da bomb" when you are driving. Go back to sleep, maybe things will work out!

  5. When the Pontiac Fiero debuted,I was very eager to give it a shot. Great concept, but that horrible 4 banger sucked all the joy out of it.

  6. For me it was a restored 1966 GTO. I wanted so much to love it, but it handled like a 16' sea ray.

  7. Mitsubishi 3000GT, the base model SL with an automatic. Looks great, but that's about it.

  8. Vw Karmann Ghia. Looks like a vintage Porsche but drives like a, well, a vintage Porsche. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have the Renault R5 Turbo. Looks like hell but drives like the devil is chasing it.

  9. 71 Dodge Monaco with faded Mt prospect black and white paint job, no hub caps, and no cigarette lighter.

MGA, Austin Healey 3000, XK120 etc etc. I get the impression that these cars are not as nice as modern fare.

  10. 47 years later--overrated performance, handling and driveability with the heavy rear-end "anchor". Very overpriced. The pretty Porsche 911T.
