MGBrat: 1971 MG MGB

Out of all the cars that I've seen El Camino'd, this is a first. For some reason the cheeky little British sports car from Morris Garage have been spared the ignominy of having the tail cutoff -- probably because convertibles are already roofless and removing the trunk top is strange to say the least.  Anyway, find this 1971 MG MGB offered for $35,000 in Palm Desert, CA via Hemmings.

The most common style of cars to be subjected to El Caminoization is a coupe or hatchback -- quick work with a sawzall and a piece of rear glass gives you a small bed where the old trunk/rear-seats used to be, but removing the trunk from a convertible is a new one on me.

The astronomical asking price is somewhat justified by the super clean B-series inline-4 under the hood, but still this car should come with a $30k savings bond under that tonneau cover to be a really good deal if you ask me.

  1. Looks really nicely done, though. The whole car is in good shape. I think you could pretty easily make one as nice for less, even starting with a 20k car. Nice Bs are better money than 5k now. I'm as sad about that as you are.

    1. Yeah, best of luck to the seller. Hagerty pegs a #1 concours '71 B at $26.6K - if you believe in valuation guides. Not sure if this customization ads $10K in value...

  3. I'll guess that his wife told him to get rid of it, but he doesn't want to. This way, he can say he tried. BTW, when was the last time you saw an MGB with the smog pump and v-belt still in place?

That bed looks no bigger, and certainly less functional, than the original trunk would have been.
The GT would have more luggage space. And keep rain and thieves out.

  5. At least there's a lot of room for carrying spare Lucas electrical parts.
