Don't call me Fiero: 1986 Ferrari 308GTS Replicar

It is almost an automotive cliche to turn a Pontiac Fiero into something more exotic and flashy.  Ferrari and Lamborghini body swaps seem to be the most common ones.  The Fiero's plastic body panels made the car perfect for this sort of thing.  General Motors made a dizzying number of powerful front wheel drive 4-6-8 cylinder engines that are ripe for swapping into the Fiero platform.  Find this 1986 Ferrari 308GTS Replicar in Orange, CT for $11,500 via craigslist.

The listing is very short on details about the car.  The car has the stock 2.8 pushrod V-6/4 speed manual combo only has 30,000 miles on it.  Recent work includes a new: clutch kit, clutch cables, and shift fork.

The body looks to be in great condition and does a strong job impersonating a Ferrari 308.  The stance crowd will not be a fan of the amount gap between the tire and fenders here.  The interior does not make much of an attempt to recreate the Ferrari car.  The only major modification seems to be the addition of the four spoke wood steering wheel and prancing horse badge on the passenger side of the dash.

Yesterday's edition of DT featured a Fiero with a supercharged 3800 V6 engine.  What engine would you swap into this car to match it's racy looks?  Northstar?  4.9 Caddy V8?  3.9 pushrod V6?

  1. I have to wonder what that Ferrari built V8 that they put in the Lancia Thema goes for (or if there are any other real Ferrari motors that could be picked up for cheap). Putting an actual Ferrari motor in that would be maximum trollage.

Although an LS4 would probably be cheaper and easier to maintain, and equally fast.

  2. An LSJ from a saturn ion redline/chevy cobalt ss with a pulley kit would do the trick without too much of a squeeze both into the bay and on the wallet.

  3. I would love it if a 2nd rate Tom Selleck look-a-like bought this.

  4. I'm no expert, but the white back up lights and Cromadora wheels indicate this might be an original MERA, made by Corporate Concepts and only available at Pontiac dealers (ie, not a kit).

If it were, it would be much more rare (and valuable), as only 247 MERAs were made before Ferrari legally persuaded GM that making these was a really, really bad idea...

-Stan (who has a soft spot for MERAs. Chalk it up to watching all those Magnum PI reruns...)

  5. One of the best looking non-Fiero Fiero's I've seen. Lowered stance would help it a lot too.
