DTM5 Update: Hydraulic Losses

Some astute readers may remember that we do occasionally write about our own project cars around here! We started with a neglected refrigerator-white Volvo 242 in 2012, did some refurbishment, and sold to our friend Alex who went Full Swede on the car - it now sports a Volvo inline six swap, custom made wheels, luxed-out interior, mondo brakes, and has been detailed to the hilt. Vince and I went our separate ways into various other projects; the E-i-C chose to devote his spare 15 minutes every Saturday afternoon to a Saab 99 and then a Buick Roadmaster, while yours truly has delved into other Volvos and NA Miatae and BMWs more extensively, including a 1973 2002 and this black-on-black 1993 E34 M5. You haven't heard much about the M5 lately (since my trackday writeup) but rest assured it is still rumbling around the mean streets of the South Bay Los Angeles area. For a while it was also barfing hydraulic fluid all over those same streets, forcing me to face grim reality and address some necessary repairs in the power steering / self-leveling suspension system.

Buf'd Turbo: 1985 Buick Riviera T-Type

The Buick Riviera appeared on the automotive landscape in 1963 as a personal luxury coupe on the E-body platform (later shared with the Eldorado and Toronado), but in rear-drive only configuration. A few decades later and somehow the Riviera managed to avoid the front wheel drive fate that destroyed its friends and there was even a turbocharged V6 version for the ultimate in personalized luxury something.  Find this 1985 Buick Riviera T-Type offered for $6,700 in New Haven, CT via craigslist.

Nice Price: 1975 Toyota Celica GT

The first generation Celica hit the pavement running at the 1970 Tokyo Motor Show with a sense of optimism befitting a young middle weight.  It wasn't a pricey supercar like Toyota's 2000GT, but it was so much more than the typical Corona or Crown coming out of Toyota at the time.  It was sporty, cheap, and its simplicity-over-muscle approach to the fuel crisis era pony car made it a first round knockout. Find this 1975 Toyota Celica GT hardtop offered for $2,500 in Lewiston, ID via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Why Let Kids Have All The Fun: 2005 Subaru Outback XT

For a few generations now, the Impreza has been the fun car in Subaru's USA lineup -- it is the only car that gets the awesome STI (Subaru Tecnica International) treatment and is styled by a teenager.  However, does that mean that only flat-brim wearing Impreza drivers get to have all the fun? Heck no -- because Subaru put some of their secret sauce (it comes in a spinning noise maker) into most of their models including the all-grown-up Outback.  Find this 2005 Subaru Outback XT offered for $6,500 in Boise, ID. Tip from FuelTruck.

The Northern Star: 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT V8

The Pontiac Fiero was so close to greatness.  It had an exotic mid-engine setup, a plastic composite body, and the combined engineering might of the best at Pontiac to make it demolish all takers...but what happened?  Why did it get the same treatment as the Banshee from the 60s...were the guys at GM's Corvette division really that insecure?  Yup.  You bet.  Find this 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT V8 offered for $8,500 in Lake Geneva, WI via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!

Coffee Brake: Q&A With An Artist

Coffee Brake -- A weekly Friday break from the mundane and into the arcane, By DT E-i-C Vince: As a general rule, I avoid anything Web 2.0 (no, it isn't because I'm a geezer, but it is because I remember when you needed to know how to code HTML from scratch or use some terrible text based FTP client to transfer files in order to have any business being on the web.) but occasionally I find some gems while cruising the instagram highway.  This past week I stumbled onto the relatively new account of 15 year old UK based Andrew Grosuleac who has a collection of his own hand drawn art on instagram.  Check out A.Grosuleac's account here on instagram and read our Q&A with an artist below.

No Chevy: 2003 Jaguar S-Type R

The Jaguar S-Type was introduced in 1999 as an executive offering in the Ford owned era of Jaguar's non-independent epoch.  The S-Type rode on the Ford DEW98 platform that was shared with the Lincoln LS and it wasn't a bad car...but it wasn't a great car either.  So this thing lives somewhere between the E-type and the F-Pace in terms of aesthetics, performance and desirability.  Find this 2003 Jaguar S-Type R offered for $9495 in Houston, TX via craigslist.  Tip from Jeff.

Secret 16V: 1993 Volkswagen Cabriolet

The VW Cabrio has a well earned reputation for being a hairdressers car and is not normally associated with performance engine swaps.  The factory Cabrio SOHC 1.8 engine only put down 94 hp so there are no tears lost at its disappearance here.   Somehow today's car ended up with a 16V engine, but this large detail is not revealed by the seller in the listing.  It is beyond rare to find a Craiglist's seller that downplays or does not even mention any modifications made to a car.   Find this 1993 Volkswagen Cabrio for sale in CT for $1,900 via Fairfield County Craigslist.

For this week's Thursday Twister, it is time to name your favorite 3-wheeled car.  Thats right, we are going off the reservation and into the woods.

Something-Something-Something: 1996 Packlin Lincoln Packard

There is just so much wrong in this next listing, but let's first dissect the text entered in the "title" portion of the advert.  1996 -- yes, this is good, the year of manufacture; Packlin -- not sure what packlin is...perhaps the crinckly bags that chitlins come in?  Lincon -- another thing that isn't a word that I understand...a short wheelbase Lincoln perhaps? Packard -- This is a defunct American luxury automobile brand that died because Roosevelt promised Stalin the dies to the Packard Senior sedan so the Russkies could make the ZiS-110 limousines.  Find this 1996 Packlin Lincon Packard here on eBay bidding for $5,000 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go, located in Pittsfield, MA.

All American Nissan: 1985 Spartan II Neoclassic

To some people the "neoclassic" kit-car is a complete abomination, but to others it is an acceptable abomination that deserves a place in the world of strange & unique cars.  I'd put them somewhere between Meh and Methamphetamines, but this one is a doozie.  Find this 1985 Spartan II Neoclassic offered for $12,500 in Gilbert, AZ via craigslist. Tip from Rock On.

Mid Week Match-Up: Talk Jeff Out Of A W8 Passat

This week's Mid Week Match-Up is to help Jeff who is considering a trip to isn't right...Mechanicsburg, where you can find this 2004 Volkswagen Passat W8 with a 6-speed manual-- BUT, we have a short window to talk him out of it.  What should Jeff get instead?

You Had Me At Bea Arthur: 1997 BMW M3

sleep·er  noun; A form of chokehold used in martial arts that stops blood flow to the brain that causes cerebral ischemia and unconsciousness in a matter of seconds when applied appropriately.

The term sleeper gets tossed around the interweb more often than fake sexy pics of Bea Arthur, but lemme tell ya...this next thing is the real deal.  The real mother lode.  A cornucopia of Golden Girl bikini mayhem...a..Rue de McClanaham-sandwich...a.what...I'm lost.  Where was I?  Is this a dream?  What is Betty White doing on the hood of that BMW?  Find this 1997 BMW M3 offered for $14,000 in Buffalo, NY.  Tip from Jeff.

2006 Lamborghini Murcielago Replica Project

An oft repeated story is that the tractor manufacturer Lamborghini started building fast exotics because Enzo Ferrari would not build a special car for Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini. People do the strangest things when motivated to succeed. Perhaps the builder of this next thing wanted a Lamborghini, but didn't want to pay the crazy premium for a modern exotic or perhaps he wanted to besmirch the good name of Lamborghini...either way, this thing makes a statement.  Find this  2006 Lamborghini Murcielago Replica Project offered for $12,000 near Atlanta, GA via craigslist. Tip from Richard.

Eyes On Me: 1961 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite

Some people aren't content with buying stuff off the shelf; they need something bespoke to make a statement of how different and unique they are.  For that reason, over 50 years ago, someone in Montana decided there was too much chance of seeing themselves coming the other way in a Little British Sportscar.  Find this modified  1961 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite for sale in Seattle, WA for $1,950 via craigslist.

My Boy Blue- 1967 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham

Last week at the NY Auto Show, Johan De Nysschen was fielding questions from a circle of roughly twenty auto journalists (and myself) about Cadillac's future plans.  On his last call for questions, I briefly considered asking whether there would be a CT6 Bro-ham or CT6 Talisman edition on the horizon.  Sensing he might not have been amused with my question, I kept it to myself and giggled at what his response might have been.  Sadly, the combo of baby blue paint over baby blue leather seats over a baby blue dash is not available on the 2017 Cadillac option list.  The color palette of the 1960's cars was quite a bit more adventurous than today.  Don't worry though as this 1967 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is for sale in Wappingers Falls, NY for $7,500 via craigslist.

The recipe for a the ultimate good times with a craigslist advertisement goes a little something like this: First, find a inexpensive car in extraordinary condition. Then, make unsubstantiated (and unverifiable) claims like owned by a former duke of Albania or used in the independent film " Marco Polo's day off". Finally, write your test in ALLCAPS.  That, my friend, is how you do it.  Like this 1993 TOYOTA CAMRY, 94,250 MILES, GRANDMA'S CAR (FOR REAL) - $3200 (TRUMBULL, CT.) via craigslist.

3 For 1: 1987 BMW 635CSi

The E24 generation BMW 6 Series was a grand luxury tourer sold from 1976 through 1989.  Its shapely shark style curves were penned by legendary designer Paul Bracq and prices have been reasonable for years...but today's deal is particularly interesting.  Find these 3 1987 BMW 635CSis offered for $16,500 as a package in Harford, CT via craigslist.  Tip from Art.
