Northeast Field Report: Sunday 9/17 Caffeine And Carburetors

If you live anywhere in the tri-state area Caffeine and Carburetors in tony NYC suburb New Canaan, CT is a 100% must see event.  I am very local to here and went to their only 2017 show two days ago.  The vast array of high end cars that show up for this event blows me away each and every single time I visit.  Porsche 911s are so common here it that it makes them seem like a mass produced Honda Accord.  There are always some really out of the ordinary cars here that you read about but just never see in the wild.  Porsche was the featured marque so I purposely was looking for obscure subjects aside from them.  Here are a number of pictures of some beauties that caught my eye. Enjoy!

Rotary Wedge: 1980 Triumph TR7

The seller describes this next car as "not your typical 80's crappy Triumph" -- hey, that isn't really fair...okay...maybe it is. The TR7 had some sweet wedge style, but power was low and handling wasn't exactly amazing, but some car builder decided to change that. Find this 1980 Triumph TR7 offered for $5,500 in Olympia, WA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

What Am I? A Thing

It is Monday morning, and time to solve the weekly What Am I? puzzle, and today we've got one from the camera of a DT regular.

Bargain Executive Express: 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-spec

If you are not a brand snob and can appreciate 13 second 1/4 mile runs from your heated and cooled seats, we have a contender worthy of your consideration today.  In 2012 Hyundai added the hot rod R-spec option package to the Genesis sedan.  The most noteworthy changes were the addition of the 5.0 429 horsepower V8 engine, special headlights, and 19" wheels.  The R-spec car was pretty close to $50k only a five years ago so I did a double take when I saw one well south of the DT price threshold.  Find this 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-spec for sale in Monroe, CT for $12,000 via craigslist.

Banana Boat: 1968 Sterling Kit Car

The shape you see on the screen first appeared as the Nova kit car, produced in the UK by Richard Oakes and Phil Sayers using a swoopy fiberglass body, and Volkswagen Beetle chassis with buyer provided running gear.  The same design was later branded as the Sterling, Cimbria and Purvis, and apparently you can even buy a new one today.  That sounds expensive, so I'll stick to the old used examples like this 1968 Sterling Kit Car offered for $8,500 in Mendocino County, CA via craigslist.  Tip from James.

Franks And Beans: 1990 Honda Civic Convertible

In the 1990's, the Civic really hit it's stride here in the US and became a runaway hit for Honda.  The beloved hatchback body style was very commonly found during this time period.  JDM modifications and the Fast and the Furious craze were at near peak so a modified Japanese cars were literally a dime a dozen.  An enterprising soul has chopped the top on today's Civic hatchback, but chose pass on installing a convertible top of any sort.   The builder completely re-engineered the rear seat and hatch area into a functional hot dog stand.  The final product is surely the most Daily Turismo Civic to ever roam the streets. Find this 1990 Honda Civic for sale in Newburgh, NY for $1,200 via craigslist.

Bento Box: 1983 Toyota Tercel 4WD

How often do you run into classic 80s Japanese cars with all-wheel-drive that aren't total wrecks or complete piles of rust? Not very often...well...actually we try and post those all the time around here, but I'm still regularly surprised. Find this 1983 Toyota Tercel 4wd offered for $3,200 near Boise, ID via craigslist.  Tip from Fuel Truck.

Coffee Brake: Mystery Quiz

DT E-i-C Vince: I'd like to apologize for the light postings this week because I've been travelling for work, but I'll try and make up for it with this next little nugget of a Coffee Brake mystery quiz. This is an extraordinary little building in the center of the image (click to make it larger) but I'd like you guys to tell my why it is so interesting.

Seller Submission: 2001 BMW M3 Convertible E46

BMW's E46 generation 3-series was an excellent driver's car in the cheapest of trims, but it becomes a complete beast in the snarling inline-6 equipped M3 version.  If you are looking for a topless 2+2 with a 6-speed manual that is brutally fast for less than $10k, it doesn't get much better than an E46 M3.  Find this 2001 BMW M3 Convertible E46 offered via seller submission from Justin.

Please No Scammers! 1973 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe

The 124 Sport Coupe was a 2-door three-box styled classic (with the nickname "Tartufo," Italian for truffle) from Fiat designed by the same guy who penned the Ferrari 250GT, Fiat 600 and Simca 1000.  The final iteration of the Sport Coupe was the CC version that included revised front/rear styling and a bigger engine.  The 4-cylinder all-alloy powerplant puts out 100 horsepower via a 5-speed manual gearbox into the rear end.  They are typically very expensive, so I'm not sure why this one is so cheap!  Find this 1973 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe offered for $8000 in Stonington, CT via craigslist.  Tip from Rock On!

Thorsday Bluebird: 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan

Production of the Volvo 200 series started way back in 1974 (1975 in the USA) with a squared off shape penned by Volvo's master designer Jan Wilsgaard (known for his Volvo Amazon, P1800ES shooting brake, 164, 140, 740...you get the picture). The sedan version of the 240 might not be as "sporty" as the 2-door or as "cool" as the wagon, but they were built in huge numbers and offer a great combination of passenger room and secure storage space.   Wagons get all the glory for having extra storage space, but everybody can see the antique vases and dismembered corpses -- unlike in a sedan, where the junk in your trunk stays away from prying eyes. Find this 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan offered for $2000 in Washington, IA. Tip from Zach.

Original Sky Blue: 1980 Datsun Pickup

I can't give a good justification why the big guns at Nissan decided to market their US offerings with the Datsun badge, but I'm going to say that I prefer the old Datsun name.  Perhaps it is because modern Nissans are such deplorable piles of plastic, but I miss the old days of the classic Datsun logo with dat sun in the middle. Find this 1980 Datsun Pickup offered for $3,200 in Oroville, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Terry.

Police Please: 1989 Ford Mustang LX SSP

The Police version of any car has a special attraction because of the cop shocks, cop steering, cop motor...etc...but within the Fox-body world it brings the added cool factor of being an LX notchback version.  On all other Mustang body styles the fastback was way cooler, but with the Fox (1979-1993) it somehow flipped the equation.  Find this 1989 Ford Mustang LX SSP offered for $5900 near Albuquerque, NM via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Seller Submission: 1986 Honda CT110

The next featured trail bike comes as a seller submission from Justin who writes:  I’ve got a 1986 Honda CT110 I’m selling from my small collection.  If you want this sweet looking 1986 Honda CT110 offered for $3,600 on Daily Turismo, please send an email to tips@dailyturismo.com and we will forward your info to the seller.

Oh What A Feel...Zzzzzzz: 2003 Lexus SC430 Convertible Hardtop

The Lexus SC430 was introduced in 2001 with all of the ingredients to be a resounding success -- a reliable small displacement V8, a double wishbone suspension, rear wheel drive, a folding hardtop and room for two...unfortunately it had all the character of a box of kraft mac & cheese. However, now on the used market, it isn't a bad car for the cash if you aren't someone who wants to tear up apexes or live your life one quarter mile at a time.  Find this 2003 Lexus SC430 offered for $6,500 in New York via craigslist.  From Cory.

Mid Week Match-Up: Victims Wanted

Do you need a car, but don't know what to get? Do you want a bunch of random people on the internet to help? It must be your lucky day, because subjects are needed for this week's Mid Week Match-Up. Just send an e-mail to tips@dailyturismo.com with your automotive needs -- budget/size/location, we'll do the rest.

Sechs Geschwindigkeit: 2001 BMW 740i

The E38 BMW 7-series was the last BMW to be totally free of the Bangle styling that cursed covered the cars for a decade or so. Additionally the E38 was the last of the 7-series to come with a manual gearbox, but only in some markets....which I believe the USA wasn't included.  Find this 2001 BMW 740i offered for $6,500 in SF Bay Area, CA via craigslist.  Tip from FuelTruck.

Big Wheels Keep On Turnin': 1987 Yamaha BW350

There are a lot of interesting ideas that manufacturers have come up with that didn't pan out littering Craigslist.  Back in the 80's, a few manufacturers thought that if big wheels worked on ATV's and Quad's, why not on two wheelers.  The results didn't exactly define a new category of motorbike.  Find this 1987 Yamaha BW350 for sale in Kirkland, WA for $3,600 via craigslist.

6 Wheelerr: 1982 Dodge B250 Custom Van

If you are going to drive a custom van, it better have some serious flare.  Start with 4-rectangular windows on each flank, cover the insides with plush fur, and then put it on 6-wheels...yeah...that'll do pig, that'll do.  Find this 1982 Dodge B250 Custom here on eBay bidding for $8,600 with a few days to go, located in Hawaii.
