Wait for It: 1975 Trabant 601S DeLuxe

Especially after surreptitiously planting their music on all of our mobile devices, it can be generally agreed that the best thing U2 ever did was bring the Trabant into the view of the masses. Once being a brand new 20-year-old car requiring a 20 year wait, the Trabbi is now a cultural icon.  Find this 1975 Trabant 601S for sale in Everett, WA for $3,400 via craigslist.

Like most other European cars with a long wait list, the Trabant had features that were quite forward thinking upon debut. The operative phrase here is 'upon debut'; the front-wheel-drive and composite body gradually became obsolete over a 30 year run. Though Trabant engineers continued to put DDR-Approved pencil to Universally Administered paper, the powers that be rejected each proposal for new models, citing tooling material shortage.

The car pictured here is a DeLuxe model, a false title of Saxon nobility in this case. We don't know for sure, but DeLuxe may have gotten you Venetian blinds, a reverse light, and a special formulation of Duraplast bodywork that produced slightly less poisonous off-gassing when burned in protest of long lunch lines.

  1. Is it wrong to want this as much as I do?

  2. No, it is not. Follow your conscience.

  3. These are actually rather sought after these days. This is probably a good deal for the right person.

  4. The only one I've seen was in Guatemala (!), and it was very, very quick... Probably had a swapped engine...

  5. About 10 years ago they were still quite plentiful in some parts of Germany, no they have received cult status and are rising in price. They remind me of the DKW Junior which was FWD 3 cylinder 2-stroke and made with metal.
