Survivor In Blue: 1971 MG MGB GT

I've said it before and I will say it again -- five large doesn't get you much in a classic chrome bumper coupe/fastback these days, so it gets my attention when something well preserved hits this magic low water mark.  Find this 1971 MG MGB GT offered fir $4,800 in San Diego, CA via craigslist.

The MGB GT was a fixed roof version of Morris Garage's iconic MGB roadster, introduced in 1965 and built through 1980 for various markets.  When first released, the GT used the same BMC B-series inline-4 cylinder engine, but added small back seats for miniature passengers and Pininfarina designed greenhouse with a fastback lift-gate and storage area.

Under the hood is a 1.8 liter OHV inline-4 rated at 91 horsepower and 98 ft-lbs of torque.  The hardtop GT version was marginally heavier than the convertible MGB (and slower), but stiffer torsional rigidity will make it nicer in the turns...and the biggest bonus is not getting wet in heavy fog.

The interior on this MGB GT looks really nice for the asking price, but the seller admits that the driver's seat need attention, as does the e-brake cable and speedo gear.  The paint is old (faded per the seller) but I wouldn't touch it other than a good detail.

  1. Deal of the month if not rusty! Looks like the head was done recently. Is steering wheel the early option one from '67?

    1. Looks like the Moto Lita wheel seen as an easy mod on everything 60's from the British as well as '65-'68 Mustangs

    2. If not rusty...yeah. My personal experience here requires me to implore any interested parties to please bring a magnet and a screwdriver. Frame rails, doglegs, rockers and crossmember were all toast in the GT I found in Tampa on DT. Seller said it was rust free during our multiple phone conversations. YMMV but still...

  2. Looks like an excellent deal on a classic that you can live with forever if you have basic mechanical skills. As long as the rust truly is minimal, this is one to jump on if you are in the market. Sadly California is still located inconveniently far from me. I hope they fix that soon...
