Say No To Drugs: 1979 Chevrolet Corvette Caballista

Your mullet is showing a hint of silver, and you are starting to feel the ever-present glare of father time. You aren't dead yet, but the inevitability of the cold confines of an earthen tomb tugs heavy upon your plaque riddled heart.  It is time for a mid life crisis car -- something like a Corvette...but with a touch of class...perhaps styling from a Stutz Blackhawk or one of those Mercedes Gazelle kit car things.  Like this 1979 Chevrolet Corvette Caballista offered for $17,000 in Macungie, PA via hemmings.

The Caballista was the Pietà of an artist named Les Dunham (known for his SuperFly Corvette Cadilliac custom that was featured in the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die) and somehow he built 50 examples of the Caballista.  More amazing is the fact that he sold 50 examples of the thing you see on the pages here for something in the range of $65k in today's money when new.  Yikes!  I knew that people did lots of drugs in the late 70s early 80s...but, wow.

The 350 cubic inch V8 under the custom hood isn't going to impress anyone with malaise era tuning in the sub 200 horsepower range.  At least you get a 4-speed manual gearbox in this Caballista, because I would assume that most were sold with autos when new.

See another oddball for cheap?

  1. Okay I get it. Like they did in the 40's and 50's. Take a sketch pad, make a drawing and then create your custom out of a junker.

How in the world do you
1- keep and drive a thing like this in public?
2- convince people to buy one?

    PT Barnum was so right.

    1. What's more amazing was that this wasn't alone; there was a whole genre of restyled cars like this in the '70s - Zimmer, Excaliber, etc. And this, except for the bumpers, is probably one of the better examples - I sent the tip line a Zimmer I'd found in Atlanta last week. They probably still haven't forgiven me for it.

  2. At least it would spare you the embarrassment of being seen in a 79 corvette,,,

  3. Lemme get my Super Fly clothes on and practice my gangsta lean.

  4. It's as if the movie car from "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" had an illegitimate child...
