The Full FX: 1987 Toyota Corolla FX-16

Who says that the only factory 4A-GE powered cars that you could slam backwards through a guardrail were the AW11 MR-2 and AE86 GT-S? Known for its hop-scotchy and tail-happy ways under trailbraking and throttle lift, the AE82 chassis FX-16 was Toyopet's not-very-FWD-feeling answer to the Golf GTi. Find this 1987 Toyota Corolla FX-16 GT-S, now with supercharger and a 6-speed for sale in Vallejo, CA for $5,000 via craigslist.

The FX-16 was yet another totally rad offering from late-80's Toyota, who, being the complete antithesis of itself now, made exclusively cool stuff. While everything in the catalog was getting a 5-speed, twin cams, and wicked graphics, Toyota figured why not chuck that formula at the plebeian FWD Corolla. Now nearly all blown up and destroyed, this GT-S remains in great shape with the best of the factory options and a ton of tasteful upgrades.

This particular FX16 has been swapped with the final version of the Japanese 4A-GZE Supercharger motor coupled with the 6-speed transaxle. These motors made many torques and will certainly move a 2,100lb car along just fine, not to mention make screaming noises. In addition, the seller has added some coilovers and really nice looking BBS wheels. The bike rack is best to move to one of your less reliable cars.

The interior of the FX16 is like your aunt who gets on the dance floor at a wedding, barely moves, but thinks she's being 'one of the crazy kids'. It was wild 'n' crazy for Toyota but fairly tame for just about everyone else at the time. High back, bolstered seats and instruments that read really high numbers were placed in an other-wise Corolla-y cabin.

  1. I drove one of these without the supercharger and it was a barrel of laughs. The engine loves to rev and sounds great doing it. This one looks like tons more fun. I wish there were cars new that were this much fun. Maybe the fiesta ST...
