Sleeper Style: 1978 Mercury Zephyr Wagon

From 1978 through 1983, the Zephyr was a Mercury's Fox Body family hauler that shared most of its parts with the Ford Fairmont.  Like the Fairmont, the Zephyr was available as a 2-door, 4-door, and wagon with Pinto Inline-4, Thiftmaster inline-6 or Windsor Vee-8 power.  Find this 1978 Mercury Zephyr Wagon here on eBay bidding for $5,603 with a few hours to go, located in Rapid City, SD.

As far as Zephyr Wagons found around the back roads of this great country, this one is straight, has nice paint, and looks nice inside as well.  If you want a sleeper wagon for a decent price, this might be a winner.

This Zephyr Wagon was equipped from the factory with the Ford 5.0 liter V8 engine, but the dial was turned up to 11 with a few modifications by the owner.  From the seller:

The 5.0 engine was completely rebuilt.  Block bore 0.030 over, COMP Cams Xtreme Energy XE268H, Lunati timing chain, Flo TEK aluminum heads, roller rockers, ARP fasteners, Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap aluminum intake manifold, Demon Speed Demon 650 cfm carb, MSD Ignition Digital E-Curve Pro-Billet Distributor, Flowtech ceramic-coated headers, aluminum water pump, and much, much more.  These are just the highlights.  In keeping with the sleeper theme, the stock valve covers were massaged to fit and engine was painted original blue and topped with what is left of the stock air-filter cover.

The C4 automatic transmission was determined to be fine so it was treated to B&M shift improver kit and an 11" TCI Breakaway torque converter.  Differential is a posi-trac with 4.10 ring and pinion.

See another V8 wagon with room for your crew?

  1. Looks like a great sleeper! I love when nicely built engines look totally stock under the hood.

  2. The stickers/decals in the back window add to the sleeper cred.

  3. Really nice. The only thing I would change would be to swap the original bench for the bucket/bench that came in the 1982 upmarket sedan. Much better support.

  4. Just so spot on! I liked it at that price before the rumble. Nicest sleeper in a while.

  5. That is so clean too, what a great wagon o' speed! Hilarious fun for the new owner I'm sure. Nice feature DT!
