One Owner, Low Miles: 1980 Triumph TR8 Convertible

I know what you are thinking -- this is all the money with a large gratuity for a Triumph TR8. The wedge shaped thing that isn't quite a classic, and should be well depreciated.  However, you might be surprised at the condition of today's wedge salad and rethink your scoffing at the price.  Find this 1980 Triumph TR8 offered for $10,999 in Polson, MT via craigslist.  Tip from Zach. 


The Triumph TR8 is the Rover V8 powered cousin of the wedge shaped TR7 and was built in limited quantities for the North American market from 1978-1980.  TR8 enthusiasts estimate that fewer than 1000 of the convertible versions still exist on the road (more likely in garages and service bays) today.


That big hunk of metal under the hood is a 3.5 liter alloy V8 that is the descendant of the old Buick-Olds-Pontiac 215 V8.  Expect power with stock smog controls to be less than exciting because they only made 133 horsepower when new, but this example appears to have some non-stock parts under the hood -- with any luck it is more responsive and powerful than stock.


For a 36 year old car, this thing doesn't look bad at all -- and with one owner and only 31,000 miles on the odometer, it is likely one of the nicest TR8s around.

  1. ~ Believe it or not the TR8 outperformed a contemporary Corvette.
    This is certainly an excellent example. At 11k it seems reasonable.

  2. The 4 barrel carb conversion with a good exhaust makes a HUGE difference on these cars. Like a 40HP difference. These are great driving cars with nimble handling and a compliant ride. This one is nice, but not the best color...

  4. I'm ok with the color, gives the car a bit of early 80s funkiness. Aftermarket carb setup would be an issue here in Ca.

    I've kinda wanted one of these for a while, no it doesn't make any sense. Should really get something more practical, you know, like a TVR.
