Knock, Knock: 2002 BMW M3 E46

Hear that?  That's one of Bavaria's finest sport coupes knocking on the door of Daily Turismo's price range.  You may enter.   Find this 2002 BMW M3 E46 for sale in Olathe, KS for $21,000 via craigslist.

And no, this example isn't a used-up daily driver.  According to the ad, it has under 50K miles.  There are a few blemishes, but we are comforted by the seller's candor about them.  We are here for this car's seemingly fresh greasy parts and the promise of a long road ahead.

And what grand greasy parts it has.  It is equipped with a 333 HP straight 6 with a torque curve flatter than, well, Olathe, KS.  It can hurl this little 3-series to 60 in under 5 seconds and receives glowing reviews to this day.  Of course, we like to do our own shifting here at DT and the 6-speed lets us do plenty of that.

Is it a pleasure to drive through the twisties?  It's a BMW M3.  It will take the on-ramp at twice the posted limit with about as much suspense as Stephen Curry making your high school's varsity team. And it will look good doing it.  From its subtle, Buick Grand National hood bulge to its twin spokes, this M3 wears a Tux wherever it goes. Welcome to Daily Turismo, E46 M3.

  1. That knocking sound could be the rod bearings so you want to check if this has been done. I thought these all came with strut bars as well.

    1. Paulmar, I assumed that knocking sound was the vanos...but E46 M3s did have that recall with the rod bearings -- an easy thing to check at a dealer if you've got the vin and a persuasive personality. -Vince
