Saddle Up: 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe

The first generation Mustang is one of the cars that should be on an American car lovers bucket list -- not because it is the best classic car to own, but simply because it is iconic.  Ford sold millions of these things in the 1960s and they were used as daily drivers and high school kid's cars in the 1980s/1990s -- but now, they are getting expensive. Find this 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe here on eBay bidding for $7,600 with 3 days to go, located in Yorba Linda, CA.

You can find very inexpensive Mustangs, but they are often inline-6 powered (or cut-up transplants) and low on options -- not today.  This '66 is a 289 4-barrel, 4-speed, with factory AC, power steering, and power disc brakes.

The 289 cubic inch small block V8 under the hood is good for 225 horsepower and is mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox.  This one has a very dirty engine compared to the interior and exterior -- but it's nothing you couldn't fix with some elbow grease and a few new/reconditioned parts.

The interior looks really nice for the current bidding price, and while it isn't perfect, it seems much nicer than you'd expect for a sub $10k example.  I'm not trying to confuse the price of the fastback Mustangs with the Coupes, but for $5-10k you don't get much in a '65-66 these days.

  1. 225 horsepower is highly optimistic gross HP. To the wheels, that Mustang would see probably 140 at most. A bit disappointing, but that is what you have to expect with older cars.

    1. The factory numbers were 200 gross HP for the 2bbl and 225 for the 4bbl. 'Gross' means at the flywheel, without the engine driving all the accessories e.g. water pump, alternator, power steering, etc.

      So realistically you reduce these numbers by 15-20% to get to SAE net (the 1973+ standard).

      These are all still flywheel numbers. No manufacturer HP number is a wheel HP number. You need to knock off another 13-15% to get to wheel HP numbers.

  2. Looks like a great cruiser. Id love to be able to get something like this for my wife. So what if a new minivan could smoke it in a drag race? Don't street race and it doesnt matter. Go for a drive and where ever you stop you'll have the coolest car in the parking lot 99 times out of 100.
