Seller Submission: 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2

The Renault 5 Turbo was a homologation special that shoved a turbocharged engine into the middle of the normally front-drive Renault 5 platform.  This transformed the R5 supermini into something of a legend, and while you can't miss the Shakira sized rear fender flares, many drivers have been surprised to see a Renault leave them in the dust.  Find this 1985 Renault 5 Turbo 2 here on eBay bidding for $45,100 with 1 day to go, located in El Cajon, CA. Per the seller:
This is one of the official Sun International Renault 5 Turbos that was imported to America, and has DOT, EPA, and California certification.  This two-owner car with last owner since 1992 has had no accidents, and is all original with the exception of the Recaro seats.  Virtually rust free and always stored inside, this R5 Turbo 2 comes with a complete set of extra original wheels and tires.

Cosmetics needs are the carpet is stained and it needs a headliner.  There are no cracks on the dash board.  The engine has perfect compression, but needs the Bosch fuel distributor rebuilt.

Mileage is 79,000.  The clear and clean California title was issued in 1992.  We can deliver anywhere in the state, once funds have been received.  Car can be viewed at our shop here in San Diego as well.

When you consider that a similar amount of cash will barely get you into a driver condition classic 911, this lightweight hatch (2200 lbs) with a mid mounted 1.3 liter turbo engine putting out 185 horsepower and 159 ft-lbs of torque seems like a bargain.

  1. Bruno Saby, Jean Ragnotti, w. neff? Unlikely, but these are legendary machines. I remember reading an article in Autoweek in the late 1990s (when I was not yet of learner's permit age) about the "French hillbilly's weekend project". And I desperately wanted one since. At that time, the Turbo IIs were trading for under $20K and seemed downright obtainable. Now they priced where they probably ought to be: below the RS200 and 205T16 but above pedestrian sports cars of the period -- Porsche and BMW.

    I like that DT will do these occasional forays into the dream machine / $20K+ side of things.

  2. Interesting to see prices settle down on these cars. It one on a long list I would like to drive at least once. Every account has these sounding very hairy, but it would way cool to make up my own mind.

    Horsepower trends are interesting. 185 hp when this car was new was probably more than a Cadillac, but in this car set up with engine amid ship, and probably period turbo lag, peddle down, wait, wait, wait, slammmmmm!!!!

    Yup, cool fantasy classic ride.

    1. Not sure about the "settle down" part? These have been mid $40's cars for almost a decade now, with the occasional outlier bargan sale on one side and the occasional $$$ dreamer seller that never sells.
