Final Leap: 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Welcome to Leap Day on DT, where we look at cars ready to take the Leap from depreciated crap to appreciating classic:  This last leaper (not a leper) comes from those thrill seeking nuts at Mazda, the company that has taken over the sporty Japanese market that Nissan abandoned around the time they shed the Datsun name.  Find this 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata here on eBay bidding for $4,050 with one day to go, located in Mt Juliet, TN.

The 1st generation NA Mazda MX-5 Miata was sold from 1989 through 1997 with a simple jelly bean shape, pop-up headlamps, and a lightweight chassis for basic motoring pleasure.  The MX-5 sold well around the world not because of what it had, but because of what is lacked -- needless complexity, fancy-pants styling and extra mass were not on the option list from Mazda. If you are going to pickup an NA for future collectability, get one of the special editions or a first year '89 or last year '97, like this one.

Under the hood is 1.8 liter inline-4 making 133 horsepower pushed its power through a 5-speed manual gearbox into the rear wheels.  I recently had the opportunity to take a spin in an NA and it might not hit warp 8, but the overall driving experience is just fun.

This car appears to have the C-package, which was a well optioned version with power steering, leather seats (checkout those wicked headrest speakers) and a tan top -- very similar to the car that CFlo recently picked up to replace the El Crashacabra.

See another car ready for the leap?

  1. Speaking of Miatas, how about the new Fiat Abarth 124 Spyder. Quite a looker.

  2. Nice guess on the C-package, but despite not being detected by either the seller or in the write-up here, this is a '97 M edition:

    1. Sorry for the improper URL reference. Here it is corrected:

    2. AnonyMX-5 -- you are correct, this is an M-edition, one of 3500 and a good deal if you ask me!
