Cab Over: 1966 Dodge A100 Sportsman Van

The Dodge A100 was the Chrysler entry into the world of cabover van/pickups (Volkswagen Type 2 Bus, Ford Falcon Club Wagon, Chevrolet SportVan) and was sold from 1964 through 1970.  The cabover A100 featured a forward control setup with no front hood opening and the engine (basic slant-6 or optional V8) located between the driver and passenger seats.  Find this 1966 Dodge A100 Van here on eBay bidding for $5,700 reserve-not-met with 4 days to go, located in Omaha, NE.

This A100 covered in a sweet blue/white paint scheme is not a bad looking survivor, even with the dings and dents of 50 years of cruising around.  Wait?  50 years old?  That's right, if you were born in 1966, you will be 50 years old this year....sorry about bringing it up.

On the inside you are treated to a UPS style steering column setup with all the driver ergonomics of a Gillig Phantom, and at least 3 or 4 gauges for the important stuff.  Sitting between driver and passenger is a 170 or 225 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine that is attached to a 3-speed manual.

  1. Bought the twin to this one new in 1966. I was comparing the 6 cylinder Fords and GMs but this one with 318/auto/pow stg AND A/C was head and shoulders above the crowd. I thought the dash-mounted shifter was unique. Drove it for 200,000 miles with only a starter and alternator needing replacement. Paid a bit less than $3000 out the door in San Diego.

  2. I once owned a A100 in red and white she ran like a dream, was my main transportation until it threw a rod and had to be traded off. Due to raising a family of girls by my self wasn't hard enough.
Although my oldest daughter did get to learn to drive in this old baby, this was in 1990 and the van had quite a few miles on her, and she taught my one girl how to drive anything, and I know she could.
