Auction Watch: 1974 Avanti II w 350 Chevy V8

Here is a 1974 Avanti II w 350 Chevy V8 (that looks like an '84 Avanti) bidding here on eBay for $5,000 reserve-not-met with auction ending on Tuesday.

  1. Customized to someone's taste. May have put a lot of money into it. Love the Avanti cars and feel stock looks just right. For me this $5k is about right because there is a lot of work to do to get it where it is right for me.

On the plus side the AC doesn't work and the seller doesn't just pass it off as needing a recharge.

  2. These later Avantis, though interesting, don't have the same elegance in design of the Studebaker originals. I'd probably still entertain owning one because they are so odd and cool, but the early round-headlight/chrome bumper versions are so much better looking. The proportions of the Avanti II are not the same as the original.

I read somewhere (a long time ago, so who knows where) that you were able to order an original Avanti however you wanted (for a price). You could select any color and any interior fabric, etc. I think these cars were intended to be exclusive from the get go. Not sure about the Avanti II though. So there's a chance that this car's color and unusual interior fabric was factory original, but also a one-off chosen by the original buyer. Anyone here have more info on that?

The Avanti story is an interesting one when you factor in the Studebaker origin, the Bonneville salt flat racing records, the fact that it was competition to the Corvette but rarely gets recognized as such, and that the design lived on through many hands and years after the death of Studebaker. Plus the rarity. Less than 6000 originals were produced.

  3. I wonder if it's registered as a 1974 to avoid emissions issues..... The smog exemption cutoff in CA is 1975.
