429 ThunderJet: 1970 Ford Torino GT

The Torino was restyled for the 1970 year with a sleek coke bottle shape ostensibly designed with aerodynamics in mind, but the only thing the Torino had in common with a B-58 Hustler is that they were both relics from another era destined for extinction.  Find this 1970 Ford Torino GT here on eBay bidding for $12,300 with 2 days to go, located in Springfield, MO.

This big Torino is covered in a shade of Medium Gold Metallic and has a cool yellow-fade-to-brown stripe down the side.  This isn't a mint condition show car, but it isn't a barn find either -- it looks like a good driver if you ask me.

The 429 cubic inch (7.0 liter) lump of pig iron under the hood is known as the Thunderjet and rated at 360 horsepower when new.

The big torquey V8 is mated to a 3-speed auto gearbox, which is a perfectly good match for the mass and style of the Torino.

See a cooler old 2-door for cheap?

  1. 3 years ago this would have been a sweet coffee shop lot cruiser. With gas at $1.70 it could make a compelling second daily driver.

  2. B-58 analogy perhaps less obvious than F-105 - at the time the most powerful single-engine aircraft ever built - and about the time this thing was built the B-58s were all being parked in the desert in Arizona and left to rot while the F-105s were being worked to bits (and being shot out of the sky in substantial numbers) over a little country that now sells us shirts and steel pipe.

Pretty car, but as with the Thud the stubbier slab-sided A-7 did a better job at the same mission, I'll take the earlier '66-67 car or better still a Falcon of similar vintage.

  3. A Giant step forward in body design IMHO, but a lighter 351W is a better choice of "pig iron", especially with "Clevor" heads(an easy upgrade).. Or, go wild with the 427 small block (Saleen) for 550 bolt-on horses
