Collector Quality: 1994 Buick Roadmaster Wagon

The Buick Roadmaster Wagon (and Chevrolet Caprice wagon) was the end of the line for the American full sized body-on-frame station wagon.  It was a last hurrah for the classic American fuel drinker that wasn't an SUV, and was built from 1991 through 1996.  Today's Roadmaster is a white/wood Collectors Edition example with a very low odometer reading.  Find this 1994 Buick Roadmaster Wagon with 42k miles on the odometer, bidding here on eBay for $5,425 with 5 days to go, located in Glen Burnie, MD.


The Roadmaster Wagon wasn't just an homage to Detroit steel, it was also covered in wood siding (although wood delete was a no cost option) in some kind of strange offering to the gods of yesteryear.  In the early 1930s many car passenger compartments were fabricated entirely from hardwood, so the concept of the "woodie" to showoff that wood became a "thing."  That skeuomorphism was found on all kinds of cars starting in the post war era when steel became the norm for vehicle materials, and the Roadmaster might not have been the last vehicle to offer factory faux wood siding (probably the PT Cruiser or maybe even the Ford Flex has that honor) but it is certainly is iconic.


Under the hood is a 5.7 Liter Chevrolet LT1 small block, a de-cammed engine shared with the Vette for 1994, and rated at 260 horsepower with iron heads and a mild cam/intake.  It did feature full length dual exhaust and a healthy 335 ft-lbs of torque.  Shifting is accomplished with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, and if that is a mechanical engine fan (I can't quite tell...) then this has the optional tow package that adds a more aggressive rear end ratio, limited slip, and self leveling rear suspension.


As with all 91-96 Roadmaster wagons, this thing is equipped with a set of rear facing seats, which can fit adults (ones that don't get car sick riding backwards preferably) for a total of 8 seats.  The seller calls it a Collectors Edition, but that version had a unique hood ornament and was MY 1996 only.  Regardless, this is a nice example of an 8th generation Roadmaster Estate.

The behavior of passengers seated in the rearward facing seats fell into two categories: young kids would cross their eyes and stick their tongues out at the drivers in the following car whereas older kids would avoid eye contact,look down and hate on their parents for making them sit in the back. With the advent of iphones now everybody looks down at their screens...

    Man, that's a sweet 'Master. The wife & I would LOVE to ditch the Pilot for one of these. Alas, doubt it'll happen. The sense of security Heidi (the Pilot) imparts upon my wife would be a different driving experience completely.

  3. One of the few wagons I think I'd trade my Volvo 745 for in a heartbeat. If I'm picking nits, I'd rather have the cloth interior, and in any shade other than this oxblood, and the white exterior makes the whale comparison too apt. I'll take mine in Red or blue over woodgrain, please.

  5. If I recall correctly the Impala SS guys found that the relatively exotic front seats from the Pontiac Bonneville SSE (giant FWD thing slathered with plastic cladding) were a bolt-in.

  6. For the folks who covet one of these, have you ever sailed one? The engine has some guts, but you best have some too. Once catches its tack, try slowing it down, or try turning a corner....even slowly.

    Also, the seller here sounds like a real creep. Dubious car from a questionable seller. What could go wrong?

    2. That's...a little creepy. I'd swap that handle posthaste, it were me. (shudder)

      The car? Smooth McLuvin. They can't turn worth a damn? Pft. A few hours under the hood to free another stable of horses would be entertaining enough. I'd stick my two boys in the way back and do burn outs in the Publix parking lot; maybe have a buddy snap a pic from behind the car and frame it: my own version of Automobile's shot of the e63 wagon at the dragstrip. Coolest. Dad. Ever.
