Pepto Abysmal: 1987 Citroen CX Station Wagon

The Citroen CX fastback/wagon was the last car designed by Citroën before it was taken over by Peugeot and subsequently turned into the French equivalent of watered down crepes.  Today's CX is the enigmatic wagon version painted a horrific shade of coral pink that looks like it came right out of the latest edition of Crack Whore Fake Nails magazine.  Ironically, it is the perfect color for a CX.  Find this 1987 Citroen CX Station Wagon offered for $8,000 in Largo, FL via craigslist.

The CX used Citroën's bizarre oleopneumatic self leveling suspension system and a transverse front mounted inline-4 powering the front wheels (this was a brake from the traditional DS layout of the mid-longitudinal engine powering the front wheels, but probably much cheaper to design/build/service).  The CX isn't a bad way to get into a bizzaro world designed French car that you might be able to drive every day...but only if you've got a short commute or a forgiving boss.

Citroën sold over 1.2 million of the front drive CX platform between 1974 and 1991 but it was never officially exported in the US, so for better or worse, you don't see many on the road.  Thankfully with the global interweb thing, spare parts are just a few clicks away, but you might want to double check and make sure AAA will offer a towing policy for a CX.

The seller admits that he also has a 1987 Citroen Prestige fastback for sale, so you could try and get a package deal.  See another oddball for cheap? tips@dailyturismo.com

  1. This would go nicely tucked right next to a Probe in someones nightstand, I mean garage.

  2. There are a few cars that wear the pepto pink paint proudly and properly. This wagon is one for sure. I have no idea what these sell for here in the US but since he's asking twice the price for the pink one as opposed to his other one it seems that it's at the high end of the value. I've always liked these but never driven one. From what I hear they are great cars to drive. The one thing that impresses me is that Citroens are used to carry cameras for horse races. The fact that they can provide such a stable image over rough terrain shows what the fancy pants suspension system can do.

  4. This would be a perfect hearse. For a Mary Kay cosmetics diva.

Or maybe the star of the next Ghostbusters reboot?

Anyone out there got a good name for a movie that stars a crotchety Bill Murray and mellow Dan Akroyd as they bust up France searching for the soul of their departed buddy, Harold Ramis?
