Demi Priced Demio: 2011 Mazda Mazda2 Sport

You've seen some nice examples of cheap classic hatchbacks featured on this site, such as the Mazda 323 GTX, Suzuki Swift GT, Toyota Starlet Turbo, and Dodge Omni GLH. But, what if I said you could get a much newer hatch with your same cash that might make it you look like you borrowed it from a college chick, but it offers a classic hatchback fun package with modern style, fuel economy, and comfort.  You like a skittles paint job, right?  Find this 2011 Mazda Mazda2 Sport offered for $6,995 via

The Mazda 2 won't seem like much compared to the turbocharged pocket rockets blazing around the streets today, but compare it to the best from the 1980s and it looks like a winner.  The best part about this green monster is that the Mazda 2 might have room for 5 people, but it is 200 lbs lighter than Mazda's MX-5 sports car.  Zoom zoom indeed.

Don't expect the Mazda2 to beat the MX-5 at any sporting competition because its 1.5 liter ZY-VE inline-4 only puts 100 horsepower to one front wheel at a time, but the little third generation DE platform is shared with the Ford Fiesta and offers many smiles per mile.

Do you pick the medium condition new hatch or the nice condition old hatch?

  1. I realize that only I am fascinated by this but it does surprise me that Mazda couldn't figure out how to sell any of these here in the USofA (but continues to in other parts of the world) while Ford soldiers on and now Toyota is selling them. Weird. My guess was that it was going to be a good seller for them turned out to be wrong.

Why such a sour, Audi-like puss, Lil' Camper?

  2. My guess is that the Mazda 2 was green lit for US sale back when gas prices were headed toward their highs and it looked like people would be transitioning out of monster SUV's and full size "commuter" pickups. Actual fact turned out to be different however.

  5. They are really tiny inside compared to some of the other cars in that segment, e.g. Honda Fit Sport. Not a great design in terms of packaging.
