5k: Square Peg: 1974 Volvo 142 GL Custom

The Volvo 140 was first introduced in 1966 as the first in a long line of boxy sedans from those crazy Swedes.  The 140-series was a huge leap stylistically from the curvy Amazon and the same basic shape survived into the 1990s with the 200-series.  Somebody figure out that the square peg will fit in the round hole if you use a big enough hammer.  Find this 1974 Volvo 142 GL Custom here on eBay currently bidding for $5,600 reserve-not-met with 3 days to go, located in Cambridge, OH.

At first glance you will recognize that the US spec dive plane bumpers have been replaced for something from the European catalog that doesn't look demolition derby ready.  The Volvo GT grill up front is unobtanium according to the seller.

Power comes from a massaged B20 inline-4 that is fed via a generously sized Garrett T04E turbocharger.  At first glance it looks like the car is non-intercooled, but the large metal contraption just downstream of the throttle body is a water-to-air intercooler that should increase cylinder charge density (and power output) considerably.

The seller does not include a dyno result, but assures the reader that the car is pushing double the original 98ish horespower, which doesn't sound like a stretch at all.  The seats and interior panels are from a '77 242GT and the gauge setup uses a 240GT cluster with a 1984 240 dash.

See a nicer restomod Volvo coupe?

  1. It looks like he didn't get around to the rear bumper.

But it's a nice looking piece of hardware, the turbo-B20-plus-T5 combo is an interesting choice.

  2. Vince, if you want someone to pick nits (and I know you do)'s a 2-door sedan, not a coupe.

Sorry, just had to get that out.

    1. When I really meant was a Volvo coop -- as in a place to breed chickens. Let me fix it!

  3. This gem makes me drool like a French mastiff. More than that, it fills my mind's eye with visions of my (almost done) 242gt winding around PBIR...
