What Am I? Shifty

Welcome to another edition of DT's cure for the Monday morning blues -- What Am I? We find a random picture of a car and you get to guess what it is.  Last week's feature was a one-off Volkswagen based custom eventually solved by RyanM, which was admittedly almost impossible, so for this week, (with the help of K2 Mystery Car) we've picked something that is a bit less obscure.

What am I? Comments below.

  1. That last one that was solved by RyanM was amazing. I've been telling all my friends about it over the weekend and they just shook their heads and mumbled, "Car freaks" under their breath.

  2. I've been mentioned!

As for this one... there's a cup holder and an automagical transmission... Murrica.

Wow, I didn't know you could shift gears with those too. HEY-OOOOOOOOOOO!

  4. But that almost looks like a window panel to the right of the shifter. Hmmmm....

    1. I've said before and I'll say it again, Bobinott - you've got a good eye. One good eye...the other one, not so much.

  6. All I can think of is one of those Crane trucks with the offset cab... Like a link belt or something. Can't find any good pictures of the interior though.

  7. It reminds me of the console in first-gen MR2s, but it's not quite right.

    1. I can see how you'd think that, ukilla. Interesting observation.

    1. Are you referring to the car or a DTer? ;-)

  9. I'm gonna guess it's the interior of an aircraft TUG, although I can't find a pic that looks anywhere close.

  10. A side console makes me think of a mobile home, and the console reminds me of a GM. The only cool GM mobile home was the one with the dual rear axle and the Tornado drivetrain. Someone even refurbished them and sold them under a different name not too long ago....

    1. A friend of mine has one of those GMC motorhomes. It's super cool. Very retro. Tricky to drive, though. We went for a spin and he hit a little dirt passing a turning car on the right and nearly lost it. The other thing I recall is that windshields are really hard to get for them now.

  11. My guess is a roadster with a hard tonneau cover over the passenger side of the cabin but I can't find anything to match such a creature on the interwebs. Also seems an odd match for an automatic transmission.

  12. Im wondering if it's something similar to one of those single seater mini trucks, like the daihatsus?

  13. looks kinda like a retarder controller for Allison AT (motorhome) but then again not.

  14. Seriously some good guesses there, folks. You guys are so hard to fool, it's nearly impossible. Someday El Jefe will post one that's so easy and obvious; that'll be the one that gets us!

  15. HELP. I have a 4S with iOS 7.1.2. I can read DT of course, but I can't add a comment or reply. Is anybody else interfacing with DT using a 4S? I can't upgrade to 8 and DT won't allow me to choose a username on it. Do I have to create a Blogger ID and log onto it in order to use DT? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    2. K2 -- sorry, I've heard similar issues with iphones, and I even have people who can't comment via their desktop. Clearing cookies will sometimes fix PC based issues, not sure what the equivalent is for a mobile device.

    3. Bummer! Somebody out there must be commenting on DT with a 4S. Somebody, somewhere...thanks for your reply, El Jefe.

    5. K2, my iPhone 4S works great for commenting on DT (Blogger to be more general). I use my Google account for that. However, I have a 5C as my day-job work phone, and I've never been successful when trying to comment from that one. It goes into an infinite loop of sign-in and updating the page.

    6. Exactly, CFlo! Thank you so much for your reply. I'm going to create a Google account and try logging on using my 4S. Fingers crossed. Thanks again!

  16. That shift knob may also be aftermarket (RActive TK177S or similar) which would make this puzzle some sneaky business indeed!

    1. Fantastic guess. But it's OEM, such as it is.

  17. I'm guessing that it is a Ford Mustang with a dealer installed TMI or Classic Console, probably 1966 - 1969 or so.
I'm pretty sure its a Mustang but there must be hundreds of different consoles in those things.

    1. It looks like the shifter from the Elio because it IS the shifter from an Elio! Nice job, uh, Unknown! WINNER!

  20. It's obviously the Steely Dan virgin shifter in a '72 Mustank Flashback. Previously owned by William S. Burroughs.

  21. Defeat. I really wanted it to be a left-drive speedster with hard-covered passenger seat along the lines of the Plymouth XNR (designed by Virgil EXNER, natch). Older Formula 1 single-seat cars are visually similar, but ain't gonna have cup holders and autotragic shift. Whatever it is, I hope it has style......
