Mid Week Match-Up: $1k Driver

It's Wednesday, so that means it's time for another edition of Daily Turismo's better than eating tofu game also known as Mid Week Match-Up! Time to get cheap. Cheap and dirty.  It is almost impossible to find a running/driving car for less than $1,000, but what if your budget is $1500?  Most of the cars you find in this price range won't pass inspection (for rust or smog depending on your state) but perhaps you can find something that you would be willing to drive every day for about $1500.

For my money, I'd pickup this 1995 Lexus LS400 that is running/driving with no check engine light, good AC...but...it has a power steering leak.  I've been around a few leaky power steering systems in my day and can say that these will sometimes require a new pump, new rack or new lines, any of which will set you back thousands of dollars at a dealer, but only a few hundred if you are willing to turn the wrenches yourself.
You can get a new power steering pump for $150, a rack for $225, and a $35 power steering hose from rockauto.com.

What daily driver can you find for a $1500 budget?

  1. Here is a 2000 Audi A4 wagon for $1200. Issues are power steering reservoir leak and needed new wheel bearing

    1. i looked at the page source code and you used the html URL, which isn't an image - CL doesn't give the image URL with the image - you have to copy the photo to your clipboard, paste to an image host like imgur.com, which is super easy to use, then use the direct image link they give you - sounds like a hassle but when you have an imgur account you'll see it takes all of 5 seconds - and i don't think you even need an account, can be anonymous

    3. Since I probably post more pictures than anybody else, here's how I do it. I think my way is pretty darn easy, thanks very much.

      1. Find the image, as you've already done.

      2. Make sure it's not too big by checking the dimensions. If you post an image that's ginormous, you will be shamed like nobody's business and you'll need Kaibeezy to come to your aid as if you're a damsel in distress. Then you're his b*tch. Do you really want that? I thought not. There are a number of ways to check it, let us know if you need that info.

      3. I have both Firefox and Chrome on my computer. In Firefox, I just right click and select "Copy Image Location". In Chrome, I do the same thing and select "Copy Image URL".

      4. Follow the normal procedure detailed on the bottom of every DT page, pasting the URL you just got in between the img tags.

Does that make sense to you? If not, let us know and we'll figure it out!

    1. Seems the $1500 range is filled with autotragic cars of all kinds. Cheap skates prefer stick? Or is it that manual trans cars are worth more when old-decrepit because they are more reliable?

      Delete
    2. I think it is more related to the fact that manual trans cars are completely used up before they reach the $1500 class. It seems like automatics protect cars from their ham-fisted, lead-footed owners.

      Delete
    3. another factor might be if someone is driving a stick that old it's a keeper, whereas the equivalent slushbox is just another appliance to be discarded

      Delete
    4. Huh??? Can't find any manual shifters...whu?

I wrote an article once based on the premise that if you bought a cup of Starbucks coffee most days of the week for a year, you could buy a pretty decent car. Unlike the cars pictured in the video, the selection is actually amazing. I tried it myself a couple of years ago and ended up with a Previa that was spectacular for many years. The only reason I got rid of it was because I got bored and I sold it for what I paid for it. It was a zero-loss deal, as far as I was concerned.

I'd check out the Maxima and Miata, for sure.

  12. A comment on that '95 LS400 if I may.

The part you need is the high pressure line from the PS Pump down to the rack. It's a $150 part at minimum. Which is fine. NOTE: Spend the extra $5 and get the Toyota crush washers for the rack end vs. using the supplied el-cheap-o crush washers. You'll thank me later, TRUST ME. Trying to blindly fit 2 crush washers on that rack-end banjo fitting made me question my faith in a higher power more than once.

Anyway, you probably also need a PS pump. Cheap too. They leak at the point where the reservoir meets the pump body and at the part where the pulley-shaft meets the pump body. And sometimes at the "idle up" (ACV - air control valve) leaks a bit too.

And while you're in there you should replace the low pressure / return soft-line (it's a solid line from the rack to juuuust below the pump, where it goes all rubbery to manage the engine torquing it around).

You should also replace the serp. belt while you're in there.

But here's the part most people miss

You also need an alternator. Because the PS Pump sits immediately above the alternator, it's been slowly leaking onto it for the past 10k miles or so, and though it likely works now, that PS fluid will slowly kill its ability to function.

So bottom line, a PS Pump job in an LS400 = PS Pump, high and low pressure hoses, Toyota crush washer for rack-end banjo fitting, a serpentine belt and an Alternator. Maybe an ACV but those you usually just replace with a bolt. And don't forget to refill and bleed the system.

Still a smokin' deal in the sub-$2000 range. I have no idea why these are so cheap... they are sooooo much amazing car for the money. And as a bonus, that 4.0 DOHC V8 sounds in-freaking-credible when you put a "performance" [sounding] exhaust on it.

    2. Hilarity aside, that's all proof (the links I posted above) that there's a stick shift car for $1,500 or so (often under) not far from wherever anybody lives, that's a great buy. If TRDsmith is willing to go cross-country for a Hilux, then there's plenty of monetary impetus to buy one of these disposable cars. Being even more specific about the car you want for literally pennies is fine or a person could be more realistic and add all of the quadrillion vehicles with automatics to the list of really good cars for nearly nothing.

Most folks are afraid of inheriting "somebody else's problems" when it comes to buying used cars. But buying a new car is no guarantee that ownership will be entirely trouble-free. And the argument "I don't know where it's been" no longer applies with the availability of things like Carfax, a folder full of receipts and paperwork and other indicators of a car well taken car of. And take the dang thing to a detailer. For a hundred bucks, you get a spotless car.

As I wrote before, I bought a car within these parameters and it worked out fantastically. The last car I bought for $3K (my NA) and I've had it for four years. Bought it from a fellow enthusiast with a thick stack of paperwork. The only thing I've had to do to it was normal maintenance, which basically cost me nothing. Prior to that, I bought the Shadowagon (a 98 V70) for $7K ten years ago. It was a $35K+ car when new. I've never done anything to it other than normal maintenance on that, either. Bought it from a priest and it, once again, came with all of the paperwork since day one. I'm not including any of the upgrades I've done to both cars, but neither needed any of that; they were done by choice.

Frankly, I think it's stupid to buy a new car. Might as well just set fire to your money. And don't even get me started on leasing. You'll never shut me up about it and the carping will make you lose your mind.

      Delete
    3. Krayola, I ain't done. I get that most people, including enthusiasts, think buying a car for $1,500 (or whatever price, usually below $5K) is a joke and something to be laughed at. But it's not. When you find a really good car at this price point, you're actually saving it from going to the dump where it will further clog our royally messed up ecology. And guess what, there are more and more cars at this price point every day.

That's all fine and dandy that people are above buying and driving a car like this. All I ask is that they shut up when I drive past in my perfectly functional and clean car as they're broken down on the side of the road, paying $600 a month car payments.
