1k: Lego Building: 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV Project

 DT reader Sean Scott mentioned in the comments yesterday that is his dream build would be an Alfa GTV with a Ferrari F136 V8 shoved in the front.  Let's see what we can do.  First, find this  1974 Alfa Romeo GTV Project currently bidding for $1200 here on eBay with 4 days to go, located in Oakland, CA.


This is the perfect car for a transplant -- it is missing the engine, been through a few wars, and no one is going to complain that you ruined some original cream puff.  Now to find an engine...


Here is a F131 3.6 liter V8 from an Ferrari 360 offered here on eBay for $21,750.  The F131 is the final evolution of the Dino V8 first used in the 1973 308 GT4.  It makes 405 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 275 ft-lbs of torque, but more importantly it sounds glorious.

  1. Holy crap! I think I raced against this car. My first race after driving school was a drizzly day at Laguna and our class was won by a guy named Jere in a red GTV. Me? DFL.

  2. I love you guys! This is so awesome.
    What does everyone think it would actually cost to pull it off? I think the electronics would be the difficult part. Probably need a stand alone system and a really smart tech. I bet the budget would have to be around 40-50k when all said and done. I was thinking if I could ever do this I would buy a GTV shell and a crashed Spyder, shoot you can get a driving one for low 20s.

  3. Nice idea. If I was doin' it I'd drop in a Ford Ecoboost inline four at around six grand complete with alternator, starter, front accessory drive and manual trans flywheel. With 252 HP and 270 ft/lbs of torque on hand performance would be zesty without affecting the car's handling. That would leave many dollars on hand compared to the Ferrari swap with the added bonus of being able to keep the thing on the road without breaking the bank.

  4. Wonder if you could just toss on some webbers and run a chevy hei with a jessel beltdrive? Throw in a windsheild and drive the crap out of it till you could afford to do it "properly".

  5. I see so much LeMony goodness in this...got a complete non-Alfa powertrain four-banger powertrain of considerably greater than Alfa power that ought to fit, better still it'd have the purists spontaneously combusting.

  6. Sacreligeous Swaps was yesterday! Seriously, though, if you want to see the Concours D'elegance equivalent of a ducking stool, put that 360 engine into a Fiero. It would almost be worth the money to see the reactions of people peering into the engine bay at a cars and coffee event.

  7. Hey, does anyone know if an electric sunroof was an available option, or an aftermarket addition?

    1. My guess is that it would have been an aftermarket option. I've never seen a factory sunroof on a GT Veloce before, though that doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist. By the way, why drive a car when you can drive a legend?

      As a strange bit of trivia, I had a Grad once that had a very interesting badge. It clearly wasn't faded by the sun, but it had a blue cross instead of being red. It was very strange. Everybody I showed it to agreed that it clearly came from the factory like that but nobody had ever seen anything else like it. I wish I'd taken a picture of it, but didn't so I have no proof.

    2. Thanks for the link! Clearly, there were other folks with a similar badge, for whatever reasons. I sold my Grad about 20 years ago and my memory has never been great at best - too much living and not enough sitting!

      I remember discussing it at length with my local AR club. As some mentioned in the threads you linked to, it was clearly not damaged from the sun or repainted. The clearcoat that covered the badge was thick - you could scratch it with your thumbnail and not reach the actual badge and the blue was just too perfect and even. There's an obvious quality to fading from the sun and there were the other badges on the car with the red cross.

      No owner in their right mind would go out of their way to create a badge like this on purpose on a car like this, devalued as it was by the time I got it and not a particularly expensive car to begin with. They'd at least repaint the cross a similar red at the very least as a repair. Plus, it the exact shade as the other blue on the badge. That somebody (not the factory) did it on purpose was rather hard to swallow when looking directly at it.

      My gut feeling is that either it was intentionally painted that way from the factory to indicate a lower-end model or it was something else not perpetrated by an owner. It's occurred to me that if it was indeed faded, then it's possible that the paint they used uniformly went from red to blue with time. The chemicals used could have made that happen. There were certainly plenty of indications that AR didn't exactly pour a lot of money into the development of the mid-80s Spider...

      Still, it was a wonderful car despite the rusting issues. Easy to work on, easy to live with, reliable and fun, I enjoyed it the years I had it. The 951 replaced it because it was time for something that resisted rust a bit better with a bump in horsepower and handling capabilities.

      Years later, the AR was foremost in my mind as I purchased my NA. I feel like I now have the best of both worlds, while losing a load of swagger and the character of the NA is certainly quite different, often for the better from the drivers' seat and certainly from a maintenance angle. Still, there's nothing quite like throwing back the top of an Italian sports car and interacting with the wonderful interior as you peer over the lovely hood at the road ahead.

  8. Sunroof, electric or manual is an aftermarket addition for a Bertone GTV.

    1. That's very interesting Gianni. Have you actually seen one in person? Or maybe you've owned one with a sunroof...? All I've ever seen are hardtops. GTV6s I've seen with sunroofs, but never a GT Veloce.

Many years ago I transcribed on the AlfaBB for posterity a conversation that took place on the old Alfa Digest email listserv between Don Black, the former chief engineer of Alfa Romeo Inc., Alfa's US Subsidiary that was responsible for certifying Alfas for the US and importing them and the late Alfa historian John Hertzman:

      Second, no one has ever been able to produce any factory documentation i.e. parts list, parts manual, owners manual, parts supplement, etc. for the mythical GTV sunroof. The first model where sunroofs show up in factory docs is the Alfetta.

    3. Thank you very much for the link, Gianni! Verrrrrry interesting. I read the information as support to my thinking. Looking on the interwebz, I see nothing to indicate otherwise. I found this from 2007. But again, I see no proof that any of the the sunroofs mentioned are factory. I've seen some really slick installs in my time that certainly appear factory and I've seen some factory installs that would have been an embarrassment to an aftermarket company.
