5k: Stage Left: 1988 International 28ft Box Truck

This next feature can pull a serious Bruce Jenner -- it starts off looking like a run-of-the-mill industrial box truck that looks like it would be driven by guys named Max or Gus and then with the press of a button it turns into an instant stage for your homegrown mobile production of Cabaret. Find this 1988 International 28 ft Box Truck offered for $5,000 in Glassell Park, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Alex V.

This thing is powered by a 7.2 liter International Diesel that should be good for years of occasional use, and with any luck it is already registered as an RV.  If it still carries a commercial title, you might have some issues with California's draconian smog laws, but install a sink, bunk, & mini-fridge for a 5 minute inspection and suddenly you can drive this thing 24-7 and not damage the earth.

  1. In addition to car enthusiast stuff, I spend a lot of my time looking at things like this, shipping container homes and other alternative ideas for housing that could potentially be made into a high quality home with enough work. I wonder what the laws would look like for turning something like this stationary and making some massive changes, such as skylights, massive additions and the like.

    1. I would have a living room permanently bolted to the wall, so that when you dropped the wall everything would be in place. A table, chairs, TV etc.

  2. This would be a blast at an RV park. It would be also be sweet to park downtown and open up on a Friday or Saturday night. Until you got thrown out.

  4. I saw one of these the other day on the television show, Shark Tank. It was being used as a promotional vehicle for a company named Freaker, USA.

  6. I actually sent the ad to my sister. It is basically her life. Drama! (waving my hands above my head)

She is a thespian, that is thespian with a T not a L!
Her biggest role ever was playing an extra on Breaking Bad. She still gets $71 a month in the mail.

    1. That's a cool credit on her CV, that's for sure!

If ever there was a show that could bring a car back from the abyss...

I wonder if Better Call Saul will be any good?

    2. K2 -- we did a Breaking Bad Mid-Week Match Up last year.

    3. That's a great topic, DT! But wasn't that question actually already answered - in the show itself? ;-)

    4. Just some thoughts.

I always found the cars chosen for Sons of Anarchy well thought out. They had to be very specific to the characters and I loved that they made fun of the German cars.

I'll bet the cars featured in the new show Fortitude would cause some discussion. They have to endure extreme conditions but not everybody can afford something expensive.

There's something lost in the laziness of the "it's just a cop car" choices in Backstrom. What would be better...like Columbo's Peugeot 403? But there was a super cool JDM micro-van! What was it?!?

I hope they do an episode with a really great car in Broad City (a la Ferris Bueller).

I find the car choices in Constantine a little lacking, too. Come on...a Checker and a C-10? But, loved the Land Cruiser!. It's funny, because his character doesn't drive. But if he could...what would a warlock drive? The Dodge Warlock I brought up is too easy!

I can think of bunch of great car-related shows that are on the air right now (or recently wrapped up, as in the case of SOA). It's such a great topic!

    5. Posting this here for no other reason other than it's gorgeous and to counter the Aztek. We must seek balance in the universe!

You know, there are some really interesting things about that car (the Aztek), though. But nobody wants to know, so I won't bother anybody with them. Or they already know everything there is to know about it.

    6. Wow! Having owned (2) '57 Buicks, that hits me where I live! Looks like it started life as a 2-dr Super/Roadmaster. I was expecting that to be a ute,but its even better with as a workman club coupe! Someone did some amazing work on the windshield and elimination of the vent wing window on that while also leaving the character line above the sweep spear alone. Looks like they used the rear window from a Super/Roadmaster as the windshield (or something like a '58-62 Corvette windshield) Those Caddy wheel covers are the ubiquitous '50s touch.

  7. If you haven't guessed it my real name is Max (I don't think anyone is really guessing names here). I also have one brother and his name is Gus. I sort of feel obligated to buy this beast now. I guess I could quit my job and join the carnie circuit. While I have driven a box truck of a smaller size these aren't our typical daily turismo's

    Sincerely,
Max (and Gus if he were here).
