What Am I? Under The Hood

Welcome to another edition of DT's cure for the Monday morning blues -- What Am I?  Time to find a random picture of a car and you get to guess what it is.  Recent puzzles have been solved quickly by DT's commenters and the request was to make them harder...so..this next one is obscure, but not impossible.  Just what am I anyway?

Update:  Congrats to Rottenland for picking out the 2.0 liter turbo engine from the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed 1987 Isuzu Impulse RS, located here on craigslist offered for $1,000.

  1. I will hold back from looking at ebay and go with my first impression. It's a Chrysler Shelby in one of its omni forms...

    1. Yes, this is a stock engine in the car. I cropped the photo down slightly, but can provide an expanded view if needed....

    2. You've done a good job on this one, DT! I'd agree with Tom and kaibeezy that it looks like a Chrysler turbo engine. But as far as I can recollect, those were all transverse and this looks longitudinal. It's hard to tell if that's the firewall on the left and the battery location is certainly a clue. I thought for a moment that it might be Maserati Biturbo, but that's not right.

  6. Thanks for the bigger picture...I could tell the hood was deep on the sides, but not into the a pillar. Those wimpy shock towers suggest a huge front overhang and its throwing me off......

    3. I remember this Joe Isuzu ad, specifically the part where he runs over all of the cones. I'm old.

  9. Nice one, rottenland and DT! I think the TURBO font threw a lot of us. It's amazingly close to what Chrysler used...

Just to be picky, but the motor is from a first generation Isuzu which was a 2 liter. The second gen had a 1.6. Doing a bit of research, it appears that at least one other model was offered with this engine - the Aska, including a special edition by Irmscher (pictured below). Can any of our oversea friends confirm this? I found an article about it, but the engine looks different. Also, the badges on the front grill alternate between Isuzu and Chevrolet on what appears to be the same car (that's some magic trick if it happens instantaneously).

  10. I was trying to think of another 2 liter inline four turbo. Here's another:

  11. I wonder which is rarer at this point in time - the 1st gen Impulse Turbo or the Geo Storm GSi (or wagonback, for that matter)?

...or the 2nd gen Impulse RS, for that matter. Out of all of them, that's probably the one I'd seek out.
