DTO: DOKA Explorer: 1978 Mercedes-Benz LA911B

The Mercedes-Benz L-series is a conventionally setup truck (engine in front), but with an engine that is pushed into the cab and is called a Kurzhuaber (Short Bonnet) in Germany.  It was a heavy duty monster designed for hauling trailers, but could also be available in a number of people hauling versions.  Find this 1978 Mercedes-Benz LA911B DOKA Explorer here on eBay offered for $35,000 buy-it-now or make-offer located in North Richland Hills, TX.  Tip from Sean.

5k: Quarter Million Miles: 2000 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz W210 chassis was sold with the under the E-class from 1995-2002.  Mercedes offered some versions with 6-cylinder engines where the E stands for executive, but in 1998 the E for eggads my spleen just ruptured AMG version was released.  It was a $70k trebuchet in a schoolyard spitball fight and sent lesser German sedans home with their tailpipes between their legs.  Find this 2000 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG offered for $5,500 in Thousand Oaks, CA via craigslist.

5k: With A Boat On A Trailer: 1962 Rambler Classic 400

I am sucker when it comes to buying cars with matching accessory items.  An E30 with an E30 based BBQ trailer is awesome, as is anything Volvo military with matching trailer, but a car with a matching vintage boat is just beyond cool.  Find this 1962 Rambler 400 with boat on trailer offered for $3,500 buy-it-now here on eBay located in Cincinnati, OH.

7k: Olive Oil Burner: 1985 Volkswagen Passat Diesel, 36k miles

The Volkswagen Passat first debuted as the Dasher, then the enigmatically sophisticated Quantum, and finally the Passat in 1990. A well-bronzered Dasher may never be collectible. However, a stick-shift diesel-drinking Quantum wagon certainly would, except that America never got that version (par for the course, America). Some brilliant specimen of a human being scratched that forbidden itch by importing the car you see here in 2010. With a scant 36,000 miles and no evidence of rust, it's again up for grabs at a reasonable price. Find this 1985 Volkswagen Passat diesel wagon for sale in Portland, ME for $6,500 via craigslist.

Coffee Brake: What Is The Most Beautiful Car?

If you haven't been following the lengthy discussion on the Legacy GT post from earlier this week, you may have missed some great discussions between K2 Mystery Car & Fleetwood T Brougham on just what makes a beautiful car and who makes them.  For this week's Coffee Brake, I'd like to open up the discussion with what I think is the most beautiful car for sale today.

5k: Ja Makin Me Crazy: 1958 Fiberfab Jamaican

The Jamaican was another quasi home-built kit-car from Bud Goodwin's Fiberfab, makers of the fabulous Aztec, and fantastic Banshee. According to sales literature, the Jamaican used a donor chassis from a Austin-Healey, Triumph TR, MGA or VW to roll its Ferrari-esq shape around.  Find this 1958 Fiberfab Jamaican project offered for $4,500 in Pleasant View, TN via craigslist.  Tip from Richard.

10k: Survivor Riverside: 1963 Ford Fairlane Ranch Wagon

The response to yesterday's stripper Newport ragtop was so overwhelmingly positive that we decided to feature another car with the amenities of a Jordanian B&B (Bedouin and Breakfast).  Prepare to put-up or bulk-up with another 4,500 lb 'Merican beast without power steering, power brakes, or power windows.  Find this 1963 Ford Fairlane Ranch Wagon offered here on eBay currently bidding for $7,600 reserve-not-met, located in Riverside, CA.  Tip from Rene.

1k: Bronze Bomber: 1994 Buick Roadmaster

What's that you've found?  An LT1 powered family sedan that is brown and cheap? It might not be a wagon, but it'll haul a small family and return decent highway fuel economy while flying totally under the radar.  Find this 1994 Buick Roadmaster sedan offered for $1800 in Peru, IN via craigslist.  I think I found this link in a comment somewhere, but for the life of me I can't find it now.

Thursday Twister: Tow-baggan

Welcome back to another episode of The Twister, a quiz with a twist. We find some random object on eBay/craigslist/eHarmony and you get to figure out how to make it better.  Today's twister subject is a used Snowcoach by Quinox found here on eBay for $2,599 buy-it-now or make offer located in Gaylord, MI.

5k: No Option: 1970 Chrysler Newport Convertible

One of the tricks when buying a used car is that you should always pick the example with the most options from the OEM.  Those options can add up to tens of thousands of dollars on a modern luxury car, but you'll often get them for free when you pickup a used example because everybody looks at KBB and the options don't make much difference.  What about on an older classic?  The same principle applies, except that sometimes a low optioned car has a certain appeal...but how low can you go before it just becomes ridiculous?  Find this 1970 Chrysler Newport Convertible currently bidding for $5,000 here on eBay located in Flint, MI.

1k: ZZ Handling By Lotus: 1991 Isuzu Stylus XS

The Isuzu Stylus was badge engineered version of the Geo Storm GSi (technically it is the other way around since the Stylus was engineered by Isuzu...but the Storm GSi is much more common) and DT commenter K2 Mystery Car asked that we feature one.  My reply was...only if you find one. And that is exactly what he did!  Find this 1991 Isuzu Stylus XS offered for $1300 here on roverclassic located in Staten Island, NY.  Tip from K2 Mystery Car.

1k: Worlds Ugliest: 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass Aeroback Salon

The 4-door coupe is a crowded segment on the road these days, I can't drive more than a few miles in sunny SoCal without seeing a new Audi A7, Mercedes CLS, BMW 6-series, or a Porsche Panamera driven by some lady with freshly bleached hair.  Zee Germans might be having all the lately, but it was in American that a luxury brand launched the concept of a luxurious sedan with a fastback roof shape -- way back in 1978 with the introduction of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Aeroback Salon (not saloon like the British world for sedan, but salon like the place women pay to get their hair ruined). Find this 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlas Aeroback Salon offered for $1,000 in Ojai, CA via craigslist. Tip from Sean S.

5k: Seller Submission: 1994 Suzuki Swift GT

The 1988-1999 Suzuki Swift/Geo Metro/Chevy Metro/Pontiac Firefly was a subcompact hatch family with chassis design from General Motors and a powertrain developed by Suzuki.  The Swifttrofly won't get you a front row parking at the next valet, but why would you want to let one of those car wreckers to drive your sweet hatchback anyway? Just park it yourself.  Find this 1994 Suzuki Swift GT offered for $5,000 near Seattle, WA. Seller submission from Jesse.

Mid Week Match-Up: Seats Six

It's Wednesday, so that means it's time for another edition of Daily Turismo's better than running a snake dairy farm for a living game also known as Mid Week Match-Up! Today's MWMU is for DT reader Scot (located in the SF Bay Area, CA) who writes to us:
Okay gang I could use some help. Have pulled two families together. Me with two kids and her with one. The 1965 Volvo 220 didn’t quite do it and the 1940 Hudson was just right for five. Now we are adding a number six. Want a replacement for the Volvo and Hudson.

Requirements are: Fun and interesting. Can fit five plus a baby seat. Easy to work on as it is a way I am teaching the kids how things work. Does not have to be too reliable as I drive 9 miles one way and have backup modes of transport. 60s and 70s station wagons are getting really expensive and unless you put a lot into them are boring (not including the Studebaker).

5k: Scarlet Fever: 1975 BMW 2002 4-speed

Another day, another good looking BMW 2002 with 4-speed manual gearbox found bidding on eBay for a decent price with no reserve.  New class platform car prices are on the way up, but what hasn't changed in the past decade is that the BMW 2002 is a great starter classic for the man or woman on a budget.  Find this 1975 BMW 2002 here on eBay currently bidding for $6,600 with 2 days to go located in Pacoima, CA.

10k: Ye Ole School Road Trip: 1920 Studebaker Special 6 Touring

This next feature comes as a tip from Zach Z who includes a recipe for being eaten by a bear a fun roadtrip.  In his words:
So I figure this is the 'real' way to have the ultimate Alaska roadtrip.  After all, isn't it about the journey, and not the destination?
2. Commission a spare tire or two...
