Mid Week Match-Up: Find The Best $3500 Car

It is the Wednesday, so that means it's time for another edition of Daily Turismo's weekly game of cow pi-gow also known as Mid Week Match-Up! Last week we found a few cars for jolly old Saint Nick, but this week we bring it back into the realm of DT affordability.  Find the best $3500 (give or take a few bones) car on your local craigslist....for...YOU!!

I had a fun time with the search feature for LA's craigslist found a few winners.  The

coolest is this 1978 Ford Fiesta Mk 1 (not to be confused with the Mazda built Festiva) offered here on craigslist for $3500 in North Hollywood, CA.  The Ford of UK built supermini features a Kent OHV 4-banger mated to the rear wheels via a 4-speed gearbox.  Fun doesn't get much more basic than this!

The oddest thing I found was this 1964 Studebaker Grand Turismo Hawk offered for $3500 on the West Siiiiiide here on craigslist. It is a project, but it doesn't get any more eclectic than a GT Hawk for 35 bennies.

The best arachnid I could find is this 1981 Fiat Spider offered for $3600 in Covina, CA here on craigslist.  You can't beat a classy Italian rag-top with 2+2 seating for the price of a BMW 335i high pressure fuel injection pump.

I like famous people, do you?  Actually, I don't think that anyone famous was in a movie called "The Brass Teapot" but that doesn't stop this seller from hyping up this 1974 Ford Pinto here on craigslist that was used as almost a main character in the movie.

The best car that needs to be saved from the crusher is this 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 offered for $3500 in the Valley here on craigslist.  The seller indicates that he is willing to part it out but says it something is wrong with the suspension, probably the mysteriously complicated hydraulic self leveling system out back.  Swap it out for something from a SWB version and go driving.

Want to watch people get out of your way and yield to you at 4-way stops?  Pickup the worlds best commuter vehicle, this 2003 Ford Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptor here on craigslist offered for $3,600 in Santa Claria.

What kind of DT list would be complete without a Volvo 1800 on it?  NONE KIND OF LIST.  Find this 1966 Volvo 1800 offered here on craigslist for $3500 in Tucson, AZ.  It's a project for sure, but what do you expect for 3500 Washingtons?

What can you find on your local CL for $3500?  Comments below.

  1. I always loved the shape of a karmann ghia. I believe the roof line is as good or better than any Porsche.
    Ghia
    And do this to it
    550 Ghia

    1. Ah, the Ghia. The prettier, but slower, sister to the Beetle. I really liked that one with the Tesla jump seat installed in the back.

  3. What about a minty clean, low mileage Porsche 924 for $2300 Canadian?

    1. Is $2300 CDN = $3500 USD? If so...then this is good!

  6. The answer is always Miata.

Although this '79 Dodge Colt is pretty tempting other it's a slushbox.

Or how about a '5-series BMW - seems like a lot of car for not much dough.

Or here is the LA Fiesta's doppelganger in Snohomish, WA: '78 Fiesta. Maybe you can negotiate them down to the 3.5K limit

I took this picture of one on the 1985 Olympus PRO Rally back in the day.

    1. The German Fiesta might actually be built better than the Westmoreland-built GTI (says the former owner of a Mk1 Rabbit GTI). I enjoyed owning my Mk1 (and crossing it off the bucket list), but it's the Alfa's that I've owned and sold that I miss...

  15. Ooooo, but the bimmer comes complete with the (OE?) cell phone in the armrest...something makes me want to take the Amazon home, massage the redblock, complete the manual swap, throw the ipd catalogue at the suspension and leave the rest as is. Its rattiness is just right.
