5k: Baby Blues: 1973 Ford Gran Torino Sport

Ford rolled back the clock with the release of the 1972 Ford Gran Torino by making a major change in construction. The new Torino reverted back to body-on-frame construction - a change that adds considerable mass to the heavyweight Torino; needless to say, performance would suffer.  It also doesn't help that smog restrictions in the mid 70s absolutely murdered any performance from the engines, so if you are going to go Gran Torino, be sure to get an early one.  Like this 1973 Ford Gran Torino Sport here on eBay currently bidding for $6,600 reserve-not-met with 2 days to go, located in Pompano Beach, FL.

This Gran Torino vin is 3A35H116578 which decodes roughly as; assembled in 1973 (3) in Atlanta (A), Gran Torino Sport (35), with a 351 2bbl (H).  The door data plate will decode additional information such as factory paint color, transmission and rear end ratio.

Under the hood is a 351 cubic inch pushrod V8, pumping out 159 horsepower (SAE net) and 250 ft-lbs of torque.  This might seem like a big drop in power from previous years, but the change in rating from SAE gross to SAE net meant that an engine like this had its rating change from 220 hp gross to 160 hp net with zero changes in actual performance.

This car is equipped with a 3-speed cruise-o-matic transmission, which brings the fun factor and actual performance down, but fits the baby blue exterior perfectly.

  1. Walt Kowalski: Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have f@*cked with?
    That's me.

  2. Quite a presence. I had almost forgotten how striking these were.

However, the photos of the bottoms of the doors and the inside of the trunk lid make me thing that this one was gone over quickly. Bring an ice-pick...... oops, wrong site, sorry.... ;-)

  3. Looks good with cragars. Normally I don't like baby blue, but this wears it well. 73 was probably the last good year. Glad it's not another starsky and hutch clone. With gas prices coming down a bit, this may actually work as a daily driver.

  4. Best lines when the young guy went into the barbershop and mention how his ass hurt from all the guys. Ugly slow car here.
