5k: Polish Style: 1980 Polski Fiat 126p Classic

The Fiat 126p was introduced in 1972 as a replacement for the original Fiat 500 and kept the classic rear-engine rear-drive setup.  It was finally replaced in 1993 by the Fiat Cinquecento which was a front drive econobox and probably a better car in every way...but dollars-to-donuts, a true gear head will pick the 126p every time.  This particular car was built by Fabryka Samochodów Małolitrażowych (FSM) in (Bielsko-Biała and Tychy) Poland under license from Fiat SpA in Italy. Find this 1980 Polski Fiat 126p Classic offered for $5,000 in Northern Virginia via craigslist.  Tip from Charles.

This 126p has only 25,500 miles on it and it is the perfect car to come off our Super Swap Saturday celebration, because it is cheap, minty and ready to drive.  Also, it would be the perfect car to swap in a 1 liter sport bike engine and tear up a rally course.

Pop and rear engine cover and you'll get a great view of 600cc two cylinder engine that puts out a meager 25 horsepower.  It will be faster than a mule pulling a cart, but not by much.

Inside the 126p isn't exactly like visiting the Royal Archcathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslaus, but over 3 million Poles purchased a 126p during their extended production, so its got to be a decent place for a commute...right?

See another orange peel colored import?

  3. My favorite part is the still of the Patterson film covering the front license plate.

  4. What thought process gets you from "I'm ready to sell my orange Italian-made Polish Fiat" to "I'd better obscure the license plate so no one can be sure which orange Italian-made Polish Fiat this is exactly."
