15k: Factory Sleeper: 2010 Ford Flex Limited EcoBoost

Just how do you describe a Ford Flex with EcoBoost?  You could call it a Texas sized Scion xB, a station wagon on steroids, a meat head's minivan, or a small airport shuttle...but I'd simply describe it as fast.  Faster than it should be and fast enough to whoop on some cars that can't seat 6 adults comfortably.  The 0-60 mph spec of 5.8 seconds isn't shabby, but where the Flex EcoBoost comes alive is the 30-50mph freeway merging lunge that only takes 2.8 seconds.  This means your Flex is faster than a 2014 GT Mustang 5.0 or Camaro SS and on par with a 2013 Porsche Boxster S.  Find this 2010 Ford Flex Limited EcoBoost here on eBay currently bidding for $16,500 reserve-not-met with 5 days to go, located in Roan Mountain, TN.

Sure, you could pick up a Taurus SHO or MKS and have similar performance, but the sheer stupidity of the way the Flex leans on its haunches and leaps forward is fantastic.  I've personally hooned carefully driven a Flex EcoBoost company car on many occasions and can attest to the sheer hilarity of acceleration at passing speeds.  The steering might feel like Ford bench marked a Sega Outrun arcade console, but this 4900 lb monster will keep pace with a Ferrari Testarossa spider at passing speeds.  You'd be nuts to shell out the $45k MSRP these things cost when new (ouch!) but a used one for 1/3rd the original price 4 years later sounds like money well spent.

Forward motivation in the Flex comes from the plastic enshrouded 3.5 liter twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that belches out 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque from what seems like 10 rpm.  The thrust from the small Garrett GT15 turbochargers on the mass is unrelenting and lag is minimal, on par with the time it takes you to drop another quarter into the arcade machine.  The Flex Ecoboost is only available with a 6 speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive, probably a good thing because this isn't the car to row your own gears and it probably would do 4th gear burnouts without all-wheel-drive.

Bring along 5 of your friends to enjoy the surreal experience of AMG-like performance in a car typically driven by Hawaiian shirt wearing PT Cruiser dudes or their wives.  You might need your friends to chip in a few bucks for gas because the EcoBoost engine will devour crude if you have a heavy foot.

I have this insane idea that involves sticking a bunch of fog lights on the front of the Flex and taking it rally racing...but they need a few more years of depreciation and I need more Bushmills before that happens.  tips@dailyturismo.com

  1. I think the best part of this deal is that while you are driving it, you do not have to look at it.

    1. Exactly, it's kinda like a v*****, not great to look at but once you are inside you don't want to get out.

  2. I have my eyes set right on these as my next family hauler. Who woulda thought a twin turbo 6 or 7 passenger Ford would be up for grabs this cheap and not be some Florida Frankenstein build?!

  4. They could go 0-60 in 3 seconds, stop from 60 to 0 in sub 100', handle like a Ferrari, and give me a handjob while I drive it and every time I got out and saw it I'd want to push it off a cliff. I'd likely forget I owned something so atrocious and key it when I walked past it even in my own driveway.

  5. I have a friend who owns one. He is in a band has says that chicks are always checking him out in it.
I'm pretty sure they are just soccer moms that are jealous of the 3rd row, the Frozen dvd playing on all of the screens, and the cargo space.
There was a really obnoxious ad that they played in S.Cal where a bunch of Orange County moms were standing around saying that they were know as the "cool moms" Maybe it can be the next reality show. Cool Flex Mom's of OC.

  6. What's amazing is how fast these things are given the curb weight. 4909 lb. before you fill it with fuel and your own fat ass and your fatass kids. But it will still haul balls. Literally, like, lots of basketballs will fit in the back.

I personally don't mind the way they look. You just have to recalibrate and think of it as an inflated, stretched, squared-off Mini. The way Mini is going with model bloat, it will only be a few years before their cars rival the Flex for size and mass.

All that being said I still prefer the driving experience of a good ol' Suburban with 5.3L V8. Not as fast but a much better cruiser in the grand American tradition.

    1. I agree with all of that. Honestly it'd be great if the Suburban could have some of the bigger V8 options, but the 5.3L does a surprising job now.

If there was a way of slapping some SHO pieces to the Flex, I'd be thrilled. All the seats are sorta flat, so it'd be a nice move for the front buckets. See about the diffs and suspension, and of course there are electronic tunes that can eek even more oomph out of these things.

  7. Why couldn't this ecoboost make it into the new mustang? And back it up with a stick while you're at it.

    1. The only way you can get the EcoBoost 3.5 V6 in a longitudinal setup is with the F150.
Specs here. 365 hp, 420 ft-lbs of torx. Mated to a hefty 6-speed auto -- this would make an interesting engine swap into a 60s fastback or 80s hatchback. SVoBoost!!

    2. Hear, hear. You would definitely make the cover of Mustangs and Fast Fords if you were the first to do it right.

  8. I always actually thought these didn't look all that bad. But then my bucket list fleet would be a Lotus Europa, Citro├źn DS, Lamborghini Espada, and my 914/6 , so perhaps it's a taste thing . Still, one of these in orange or lime green and get rid of the stupid stainless steel butt band and it would perfectly acceptable in a life sized Lego sort of way.

I had no idea these were fast, or came with awd.

So what if it looks like it was styled on bring our kids to work day.
It looks like it would have the same stealth jet qualities as my old Volvo turbo wagon. Drove that thing fast all the time and the only time I ever even got stopped is when I passed a Utah highway patrol at 98mph and just got an admonition to slow down till Wendover .

  9. Don't forget its equally "uniquely styled" brother the Lincoln MKT. Same engine with fancier interior trim. I've driven both and kind had to swallow just a tiny bit of vomit as I approached them, but for a long distance hauler they have tons of room and are great for surprising the unsuspecting.

Odd choice for a first comment I know. But as a guy with kids, I like these. They aren't pretty, but they aren't pretending to be an suv either. It's just a tall wagon. And if you're in the market for a vehicle with 3 rows and a full bench in the middle options are very limited. So one that can also haul a little ass is pretty cool with me.Unfortunately these are still way out of my price range.
