5k: Legendary Swap: 1972 Porsche 914 Acura V6 Power

In the 4AGE powered Starlet feature from earlier today, Philol waxed nostalgic about finding a listing that includes nice photos, clear/concise information and generally gives you the confidence to go the next step to purchasing the vehicle.  This next feature isn't as well composed, but does the car have enough whoa to overcome the whut?  Find this 1972 Porsche 914 with Acura V6 swap, offered for $5,500 in Baldwin Park, CA via craigslist.

Whoa...look at that trunk scoop!!  This vitamin-B pee yellow 914 will never qualify as a sleeper, the 50 lb dog food sack sized air scoop sticks out like a hunchback in a police lineup.  A quick peak under the frunk instantly confirms that the original air cooled engine has been replaced with something that needs water cooling...but what could it be...a Chevy V8, a Subaru Flat-4, RX-7 rotary...

This 914 is powered by an Acura Legend V6, probably the C32A, a 3.2 liter SOHC (actually, it is dual cam, but only one per bank) engine that puts out 230 horsepower and 206 ft-lbs of torque.  The installation looks far from complete in the pictures, but it could be a good start for an awesome finished car.  See a more unique engine swap?

  1. Maybe you could disguise the air scoop as luggage.

  2. should have left the running Chev 350 in the car, seller obviously better at engine swaps than at writing ad copy.

  3. If you buy this can you yell out? "My vtec Just kicked in yo!"

  4. I found a 914 with an even more hideous growth protruding from the decklid. This turbocharged build had a periscope style ram air intake. Not a good look.

  5. Scoop looks like craps.

  6. Aren't Acura engines left handed?
Don't 901 gearboxes hate running backwards even if you flip the pinion?

  7. That roll cage looks like it could use some attention. The front downtubes are mitered and the "main hoop" is downright scary. Yuck.

    1. I think "roll cage" is too generous of a term to use in this case. More like "death cage" and/or a place to bang your un-helmeted head since it's in a street car.
