5k: Thinning The Herd: 1980 Toyota Corolla Wagon(s)

The 4th generation (known internally at Toyota as the E70) Corolla was the last rear-wheel-drive platform that extended across the entire Corolla lineup (the AE86 coupe remained powered by the proper wheels for the next generation, but within a few years everything was front-drive purgatory).  The Corolla was a simple economy car with no particular designs on world domination, but it was cheap to buy, cheap on fuel, cheap to insure, cheap to fix, but most importantly: it was reliable.  Find this 1980 Toyota Corolla Wagon offered for $3,300 in Redwood City, CA via craigslist.  Tip from Kaibeezy.

This is one of the few years of the E70 that used the dual round headlights and this wagon looks in great shape for all things considered.  It is not entirely clear to me if this car has the 3T-C, a 1.8 liter inline-4 that makes 75 horsepower from its 8-valve pushrod setup or the 4A-C a 1.6 liter inline-4, 8-valve SOHC good for 90 hp, but I think it is the former of the two carburetor fed engines.

This wagon looks like a great car for a teenager or family man on a budget, as it will probably be reliable and return great fuel economy for many years to come.  Interestingly enough, the same seller has two more Corolla wagons for sale...

First up is this rust freckled 1979 Toyota Corolla wagon with 5-speed manual for $2,000, but with the body damage to the rear and the paint issues you might be surprised to see that the owner says it is in mechanically great shape with over $9k in receipts for work in the past two years.

Lastly is this 1982 Toyota Corolla Wagon offered for $2,200, but it comes with a slushbox auto transmission and a salvage title...but the roof rack is included.  See another person selling his fleet to buy something new?  Maybe you can get all three for a bulk discount, Costco style?

  1. How do you spend $9k on a '79 corolla and not swap the engine? Wouldn't that be cheaper? No matter, ad is already gone.

  2. Not the same E70...Guarantee, yours in nowhere as reliable as a Toyota E70.

    BMWs are money pits.
