5k: 5.0h My: 1988 Volvo 760 GLE Wagon V8 Swap

Welcome to another Thorsday at DT, the day we feature the best Scandinavian junk found for sale on the internet.  This next feature is an international amalgam that combines the best of American V8 power, Swedish blocky styling and Eastern bloc pricing.  Find this 1988 Volvo Other 760 GLE Wagon with Ford V8 for sale in Elizabeth, CO offered for $4,800 buy-it-now or best offer on ebay.

The V8 Volvo ticks all the favorite buttons here at DT; funky looks, decent power, sleeper status, cool but uncool. This may not have the history of the Paul Newman V8lvo that DT featured late last year and Wayne Carini of Chasing Classic Cars picked up recently (more on that later).  This car may only have 1/20th the provenance of the Newman Volvo, but it's offered for 1/20th the asking price...so...

The Ford 5.0 liter V8 is a common addition to the boxy Volvo chassis; it can be bolted in using a kit from Converse Engineering or JagsThatRun.  The 1991 Mustang donor engine was good for 225 horsepower when new, but more power is easily coaxed out with aftermarket parts.  This car even has AC that is hooked up, a huge plus and rare in a V8 swapped Volvo.

The interior is pretty dirty; it looks like someone was murdered in the rear cargo area, but the seller has a modern steering wheel and seats added for driver comfort.  The use of an automatic transmission is a disappointment for some, but for others it will make a relaxing commuter.

There is some surface rust which will certainly keep the price low, but it looks pretty well sorted.  tips@dailyturismo.com

  1. I like it when sellers include pictures of a car on three different sets of wheels. Then I know how it will looks when I swap them out.

  2. ~ i added this V8lvo to my watch list the other evening but with 'best offer' format you can't see what other prospective buyers think of the value, via the bid history. i know i have invested over $3000 more than that to bring mine to a similar level of completion. air conditioning was the largest single expense, although the compressor and condenser were already in place routing the refrigerant line set was a major challenge. cruise control wasn't easy to mesh together either. while my 740 has live axle, beginning with '88s the 760 used independent rear suspension. i guess i've owned it 4-5 years and it's still one of my favorite cars i have driven.
    - wheels - i used the 15 inch ten-spoke alloys from my 940 wagon, which vaguely resemble the old mini-lites.
the buyer will enjoy this ride!!

  3. A V8 Volvo for sale in Colorado? There is currently a stampede of hipsters, albeit at a very leisurely pace, on it's way from Seattle! Hide the Dorito's!
