10k: Easy Button: 1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor R170

The Mercedes-Benz R170 generation SLK is a small two-seat roadster built to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3.  The SLK isn't the sportiest of the bunch, or the best, but it does offer a good combination of useability and summer fun in a decent looking package for a discount price.  Find this 1998 Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor for sale in Ft Lauderdale, FL with $13,999 buy-it-now on ebay.

You can certainly find cheaper R170 SLKs floating around the interwebs, but this one has only 15k miles on the odometer and isn't riding on dubs.  Silver was a popular color when new and it suits the simple styling of the R170 well.  The BIN price on this one is a bit high...but...compared to the $40k someone shelled out when new, it's a steal.

Powering the SLK230 is a 2.3 liter M111 4-banger boosted to 185 horsepower and 207 ft-lbs of torque with a small supercharger.  A patient driver will be rewarded with good fuel economy, but when whipped the little buggy will scoot fairly well.  Zero to 60mph in 6.9 seconds isn't really fast...but it isn't too slow either.

A peek inside reveals a dreaded automatic shifter...but in the case of the SLK, it probably does its job just as well with the slushbox.  At a curb weight of 3000 lbs it won't drive like a Miata, but top up or down it will be a great commuter - a small city car for modern urban America.

Is it selling your soul to drive something like this instead of a Fiat Spider?  Maybe.  Will this SLK be faster, more comfortable, easier on the wife and cost you less in the long term?  Certainly. tips@dailyturismo.com
