The BMW New Six was launched in 1968 to fill a gap in the product line from Bavaria since the BMW 501 had been discontinued in 1961. The 501/502 was a post-war styled beast that was never transformed into a late 50s/early 60s styled car. So yeah, as hinted in the last Daily Turismo Project Car posting, I ditched the 1983 Volvo 242 and traded up to an E34 M5. "What's the big deal with an E34 M5?" you may be asking now (if you're not a BMWphile or encyclopedic car geek). If I had to sum it up in two sentences I'd say the formula was: take a mid-'80s German luxury midsize sedan, shoehorn in the biggest, baddest, motorsports-derived inline six you can find, along with a 5-speed manual, limited slip rear diff, and beefed-up brakes. Then charge a premium for the high speed, low profile sleeper sports sedan that results from the righteous union.
The cost of cool seems to go up each year. Take the Porsche 912. For years it was the unloved little brother of the 911, but one day it became cool to be slow and a nicely preserved 912 costs about as much as a 911...which is to say...too much money. The Volkswagen Vanagon / Type 2 (3rd generation) was built in Germany from 1980 to 1992 for export all over the world. Up until a few years ago even the nicest condition Vanagons were worth slightly more than scrap, but as the 75 window VW hippie buses have skyrocketed in price, so have the Vanagons. The Ford EXP was a 2-seater version of the Ford Escort built in two generations from 1982-85 and 1985.5-1988.5. It was Ford's attempt to built a sporty 2-seat version of their bread-n-butter Escort economy sedan, à la Honda's CRX from the Civic. The EXP was lower, longer and sportier than the Escort, but somehow gained an additional 200 lbs in the first generation making for abysmal acceleration.
